The Integrated Product Lifecycle management group in the Department of Design, Production and Management is looking for a PhD candidate in the research area of mechatronic and smart products detail design. We are an international group of researchers that combine engineering knowledge with management skills, in a very supportive and inclusive environment. Our research and education focuses on designing and managing products and their lifecycles, particularly the issues related to product variations and change impact.
The challenge
Mechatronic and smart systems encompass software, electronic and mechanical components. In companies, the detail design of these components is carried out by specialists in the corresponding disciplines, where each discipline uses its own language and models to define the corresponding components. Translation between these languages is time-consuming, but necessary to combine the descriptions of each discipline into a full product definition; or whenever a change in the product is needed.
Interconnection-based networks can be used to build both product and process documentation. All required information for the final product will be documented inside the network of connections. Some information is part-relevant, and will be coupled to the different parts. Other information concerns multiple parts and may be stored within the interconnections between the parts. These interconnections can represent hierarchical relations; material, electrical, and data flows; order of assembly, etc.
The PhD candidate will commit on answering questions, such as: How could system design models be effectively traced to detail design models? How could these models keep the information represented by the interconnected networks? How to better design smart products?
