The prospective university lecturer will have the following primary responsibilities:
- teaching in the field of European Law in the bachelor's and the master's degree programmes
- supervising LL.B and LL.M. theses and possible involvement in the supervision of PhD dissertations
- coordination of teaching activities
- conducting research within the field of European Law
- engaging in the development of research projects.

The following requirements apply to the post:
- a PhD degree based on a thesis in European Law; candidates who expect to finish their thesis by early 2018 may also apply
- demonstrable knowledge of European Law
- demonstrable organizational and communicative skills (the ability to teach in Dutch and in English, in view of the teaching needs of the Department)
- University Teaching Qualification, or willingness to gain this qualification within two years after starting date
- experience with the development of research projects would be an advantage
- experience in teaching courses at bachelor and/or master level would be an advantage.

An ability and willingness to teach a general course on European Law in Dutch is essential, given the Department's present needs. The successful candidate will be required to teach in Dutch from September 2018, but there will be examining obligations in Dutch before that date. As guidance for prospective candidates who are not native speakers of Dutch, C1 competence in Dutch is regarded as the appropriate level for teaching in that language. While applications are invited from those active in any field of European Law, an interest in any of the following fields would be very welcome: competition law, external relations, or the area of freedom, security and justice.

Fixed-term contract: 24 months.

The University of Groningen offers depending on qualifications and experience a minimum salary of € 3,475 (scale 11 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) up to a maximum salary of € 5,405 (scale 12) gross a month on a full-time basis under review. If the successful candidate has not yet obtained the PhD degree by the time of appointment, the initial appointment would be offered in scale 10 (minimum € 2,588) with transfer to scale 11 on approval of the thesis for the award of the degree. The post will be established, for now, for a fixed term period of two years. Towards the end of that period there will be a result and development interview in order to decide whether the appointment may be made permanent.

Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law is a modern, internationally oriented institution with a four-hundred-year-long tradition. The Faculty of Law has over 3700 students and some 350 staff members and is thus one of the largest faculties of the University of Groningen. Its effective quality-control system ensures continuous emphasis on the quality of teaching and research.

Administratively within the Department of Business Law and European Law, the Department of European and Economic Law at Groningen is a high-profile and dynamic research-led group which engages in research in both the classic and more recent areas of European Law. The current research of the department covers subjects such as (but not limited to) the Internal Market; Judicial Protection; Citizenship; Relations between the Union and the Overseas Countries and Territories of the Member States; Rights and Values in the European Union; Privacy rights, particularly in the IT area; Energy Law; Competition Law, and European Environmental Law.

All the members of the Department participate in the research programmes of the Faculty. In particular, the Department plays a major role in the research programme 'Protecting European Citizens and Market Participants'. Various members also participate in the activities of the Groningen Centre of Energy Law.

Teaching in the bachelor's degree programmes of the University takes place in Dutch or in English (depending on the programme), and all the master's level teaching in European Law is in English.
