The endowed chair will work on three lines of research which are closely interconnected and also reinforce each other:

• Orchestrating societal relevancy. As a form of art, classical music has always existed in interaction with its social context. What are the implications of this for classical music in our current knowledge society?

• Modernizing cultural participation. It is common for the audience of concert halls to experience classical music largely in a quiet and static way. How then can we innovate the audience’s participation in classical concerts in artistically relevant ways?

• Preservation and adaptation of sounding heritage. Symphony orchestras are institutions of cultural reproduction. How can we develop new and relevant ways of preserving and deploying our symphonic sounding heritage?

To succeed, the MCICM depends on the commitment of all parties. This is expressed in particular in the willingness, from each of the different backgrounds (academic research, artistic research, arts education, orchestral practice), to work on a shared research culture.

A connective, managerial role of the endowed chair is indispensable since she/he will be the director of the MCICM. In this capacity, the endowed chair is accountable to a Steering Group and reports annually on the project’s planning, content development and financial affairs.

Research: The candidate should have a strong research identity which is recognized as such in the field of classical music innovation. She/he has a relevant (inter)national network, both in academia, in arts education and in music practices, and has experience with interdisciplinary approaches. The candidate’s expertise is demonstrated by a PhD degree, and a solid social science or humanities background at the intersection of science and technology studies research & music sociology/theory. This expertise also consists in demonstrable knowledge of and experience with practice-oriented artistic research from an ethnographic angle. The candidate should have peer-reviewed publications on original work in highly regarded journals within the field of cultural innovation and contemporary classical music practices. S/he has a proven ability in acquisition of funding from national, European and other research funding agencies. 

Leadership: Organizational, collaborative and management expertise are deemed crucial.  S/he is expected to be a genuine coach and leader as well as a team player, with broad academic and musical interests and an open, effective management style. 

Education: The candidate should be an experienced and enthusiastic educator with proven ability in academic, as well as arts education. The candidate has a proven successful track-record in (co-) supervision of PhD students. 

S/he has excellent communicative skills in English; proficiency in Dutch is a plus.

What we have to offer
The successful candidate will be appointed as endowed professor in a 0.40 fte appointment in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (UM) and as endowed professor in a 0.20 fte appointment in the Research Centre for Arts, Autonomy and Public Sphere, Faculty of Arts (Zuyd). S/he will be appointed for a period of 4 years.   

UM
Remuneration at UM will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience. This implies a minimum of €5,059.00 and a maximum of €7,766.00 gross per month for a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week (salary scale 14-HL2, Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment).

Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

UM has the policy that the candidate must be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If s/he does not already live in Maastricht or its direct surroundings, the selected candidate will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs, or for an allowance for alternative housing. Other secondary conditions include a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.

Zuyd
Zuyd offers the candidate a temporary contract for 0,20 fte with Randstad Payrolling. A salary depending on academic background and professional experience, of maximum scale 15 according to the CAO HBO, the collective agreement, maximum €6,940.60 before taxes, per month, under full-time employment.

The Maastricht Centre for the Innovation of Classical Music (MCICM) is an authentic laboratory for musical citizenship. The centre is a joint initiative of the South Netherlands Philharmonic (philharmonie zuidnederland), Maastricht University (UM) and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences (Zuyd). The centre combines academic research into innovation of performance practices with practice-oriented artistic research aimed at renewing classical music practices and music education in artistically relevant ways. Furthermore, the MCICM positions its effort internationally by hooking up with and building on existing research, such as by setting up a database of innovative projects in classical music and the development of a network with other active players in the field. The research effort of the MCICM takes place at the intersection of academia, music practices, classical music education and society. Research projects are aimed at the innovation of:

• The role of classical music and its value for society.

• The ways in which the relationship between performers of classical music, such as symphony orchestras, and their audience is mediated.

• The ways in which classical music contributes to the preservation of our cultural and social heritage.

The results of academic research (UM) are used in practice-oriented artistic research, which is performed by researchers, instructors and students from the Zuyd Faculty of Arts together with orchestra members and staff from the South Netherlands Philharmonic. 

Maastricht University 
Maastricht University is renowned for its unique, innovative, problem-based learning system, which is characterized by a small-scale and student-oriented approach. Research at the UM is characterized by a multidisciplinary and thematic approach, and is concentrated in research institutes and schools. The university has around 16,500 students and 4,000 employees. The endowed chair will be based at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS), one of the six UM faculties. FASoS has about 250 staff members, and about 1,600 students. More than 75% of the students have a non-Dutch background. FASoS offers two 3-year Bachelor programmes: Arts and Culture and European Studies. It also offers six different 1-year Master programmes and two 2-year research Master programmes. Research is organized around four themes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Science, Technology and Society Studies; Arts, Media and Culture; and Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development.

Zuyd University of Applied Sciences
Zuyd is an ambitious and open knowledge institute where professionals cross disciplinary and organizational borders to collaborate on the development, transfer, and application of high-quality, practically-oriented knowledge. Zuyd is actively involved in applied research in a number of fields that are relevant for the development of our region. The Faculty of Arts advocates high-quality art education that is recognised in accordance with international standards. Graduates contribute towards the constant innovation of art and both question and enrich the individual and society through their creations. The faculty has two research centres. Engagement and artistic research are the core themes of the Research Centre for Arts, Autonomy and Public Sphere. Within the Zuyd Faculty of Arts, the Maastricht Conservatory offers an international programme which relies on crossovers and integrated project teaching to train musicians in collaborative skills and in developing articulate views on performing arts.
