The Faculty Governance and Global Affairs, the Institute of Security and Global Affairs is looking for an Assistant Professor Comparative Governance and experimental methods (0.5 FTE).

Job description

  • Conduct research in the field of comparative governance, with a focus on (1) citizen responses to regional integration with an emphasis on the European Union and associated countries and Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union; or (2) research methods;
  • Disseminate research findings through high-ranking international peer reviewed journals, edited volumes, books, conference presentations, policy briefs, policy advice and (inter)national popular media;
  • Contribute to securing external funding to support research and other activities; 
  • Teach post-graduate, graduate and/or undergraduate courses related to comparative governance in a multi- level context, research methods, global affairs, legitimacy of international organizations or related topics
  • Contribute to the development of the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate curriculum, especially related to global affairs and comparative governance in a multi-level context;
  • Supervise Master theses and PhD dissertations;
  • Develop and contribute to global networks in the public, private and education sectors in the field of comparative governance in a multi-level context. This includes acting as a representative at national and international forums;
  • Contribute to public and policy debates on national and global governance issues especially pertaining to citizen responses to governance beyond national borders including governance transfer in the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union;
  • Assist the research group leader of the Global Affairs group in the day-to-day management of the research group.

Requirements

  • A doctorate from an internationally ranked tertiary institution in a relevant field, e.g. political science, governance, public administration, European or international studies;
  • Extensive knowledge of the field of research methods with a track record of research on this topic;
  • A firm record of published peer-reviewed research, including articles in internationally renowned academic journals;
  • A multidisciplinary background, and experience with working in multi- or interdisciplinary teams;
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate, graduate and/or post-graduate students, and supervising theses;
  • Experience engaging in public and policy debates and establishing and maintaining productive networks;
  • Experience doing media outreach, including writing for a non-academic audience in newspapers and blogs;
  • Proficiency in English. Fluency in Dutch is considered an asset;
  • Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. He or she will initially be appointed for one year with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance. Salary range from €3,475 to €4,757 gross per month (pay scale 11 in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities).

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a scientific institute that focuses on multidisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. ISGA analyses and studies issues in a coherent way from their local transnational and global impact. 

Researchers at our institute are engaged in interdisciplinary research and teaching within the international scientific field of security studies and global affairs. The approach to issues of security and regional integration studies the local, national, transnational and global impact of challenges and developments in conjunction with each other.
