The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University is looking for a Professor of Quantitative Science Studies (1.0 FTE).

Job description

The chair in Quantitative Science Studies will lead the QSS research group at CWTS. Bibliometric and scientometric research at CWTS is organized in the Quantitative Science Studies (QSS) research group, one of the three research groups of the center. Research in the QSS group covers a broad range of areas within the field of bibliometrics and scientometrics, from the study of scientometric data sources and scientometric indicators to the development of bibliometric network analysis techniques and bibliometric visualization tools. The QSS group also develops quantitative models of the science system. The chair will be responsible for ensuring the high quality of the research carried out by the group, for stimulating innovative research ideas, for developing the long-term strategy of the group, and for supervising PhD students and junior researchers. The chair will also organize and participate in professional courses in quantitative science studies and bibliometrics. The chair in Quantitative Science Studies will promote the responsible use of scientometrics in research evaluation and research management.

Requirements

  • Extensive international experience in the field of quantitative science studies, in particular in scientometric research;
  • A proven track record to lead a research group with stimulating innovative research ideas and a vision to develop a long-term research strategy;
  • Good understanding of relevant developments in the fields of computer science, network science, mathematics, and statistics is required;
  • A deep insight into the use of scientometrics in research evaluation, research management, and science policy, including a clear perspective on the benefits and problems of the use of scientometrics in this context;
  • Given the interdisciplinary nature of CWTS, we are especially interested in candidates who are able to cross disciplinary boundaries, in particular between different quantitative research fields and between these fields and social science research in the areas of research evaluation, research management, and science policy;
  • The ability to translate scientific results into practical recommendations for improving research evaluation, research management, and science policy is especially important due to the societal responsibility of CWTS.

Conditions of employment

The University offers a competitive salary from €5,334 to €7,766 gross per month (pay scale H2, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities ) commensurate with qualifications and experience.
