As a PhD candidate you will work on a project funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), entitled ‘Political Community Beyond the Race-Religion Intersection’. Dr Anya Topolski is the main supervisor of this project. The PhD research should result in a doctoral dissertation from the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies of Radboud University, Nijmegen.

Short description of the project: The goal of this research is to develop a European critical philosophy of race by focusing on the intersection of race and religion manifest in terms of antisemitism, islamophobia and antiziganism. At present, the socially constructed category of race is most often restricted to colour-based or biological notions of race. To fill this scholarly and societal omission, a structural analysis of the race-religion intersection is necessary. This analysis will make clear how racial exclusion in Europe is related to religious categories whose origins lie in early-modern religious struggles. This will not only allow us to understand many of the current problems of exclusion Europe is confronted with, but also to conceptualise non-exclusionary forms of political community.

- Master's degree in a relevant discipline;
- a strong interest in a field related to race/racism/racialisation (i.e. in critical philosophy of race, critical legal theory, critical race studies);
- experience in interdisciplinary research and the ability to engage conceptually with material from fields such as theology, anthropology, sociology, gender theory, etc.;
- the ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- a good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of French and German would also be highly appreciated (for literature analysis);
- we have a preference for individuals who come from groups less represented in our faculty.

possibilities for the duration of the contract are:
3 years of full time pure research;
4 years of pure research (0.75 FTE);
4 years full-time research with teaching requirements (dependent on secondary funding). you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 1.5 or 2.5 years respectively
- you will be classified as a PhD Candidate (Promovendus) in the Dutch university job-ranking system
the gross starting salary amounts to €2,222 per month and will increase to €2,840 in the fourth year (P scale)
Preferred starting date September or October, 2018.
Selected candidates will be invited for an interview in Nijmegen. They will also be asked to submit a short research proposal concerning the topic of the PhD position.
