Job description

Pneumonia remains a major health issue. Antibiotic treatment of respiratory tract infections is hampered by increasing antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, new therapeutic options are urgently needed. In this project a new class of compounds (derived from macrolides) that can activate bacterial killing by granulocytes will be evaluated for their ability to kill respiratory pathogens and to treat pneumonia. The novel compounds will be tested in clinically relevant in vitro conditions (among which granulocytes purified from healthy donors and pneumonia patients exposed to various – antimicrobial resistant – pathogens) and in mouse models of respiratory tract infection using human pathogens. The candidate will work together with other investigators (research physicians)  responsible for recruitment of patients.
