Job description

The Section of Cognitive Psychology at the Department of Experimental and Applied Psychology (www.vupsy.nl/) investigates many aspects of cognition, focusing on perception, attention, learning and memory, and cognitive control. The group is part of the Institute of Brain and Behaviour Amsterdam, and maintains many local and international collaborations. The Department provides a vibrant, international research climate with high quality academic staff supported by excellent research facilities, including eye tracking, EEG, and fMRI facilities. It has a strong international reputation, as indicated by excellent research assessments, high quality publications, high standards for teaching and mentoring, and frequent visits by international scientists. We teach primarily in English at Bachelor levels at several VU faculties, as well as the Amsterdam University College. In addition, we run our own two-year Research Masters in Cognitive Neuropsychology with small scale teaching.
 
We offer a fixed term, five-year position in the area of cognition research, with a broad emphasis on perceptual systems in (from sensory processes to awareness, memory and control). Strong candidates from neighbouring areas will also be considered. Because of the department’s long term strategy we are specifically looking for people with a strong background in neuroscientific techniques (e.g. EEG/MEG, fMRI, TMS). The position involves approximately 50% teaching and admin duties, 50% research. The candidate is expected to maintain a strong, innovative program of research of international quality; acquire external funding; conduct high quality teaching; and show departmental citizenship and team work. The candidate will contributes to several teaching programs and supervise Bachelor’s, Master’s, and, where possible, PhD students.

Requirements

•Completed PhD-thesis in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and/or cognitive neuropsychology;
•Demonstrated expertise in cognition research with an emphasis on neuroscientific techniques;
•Demonstrated ability to publish in high standard peer-reviewed academic journals; 
•Demonstrated ability, or potential, to acquire external funding;
•Demonstrated affinity and experience with teaching (as for example evidenced by above-average teaching evaluations);
•Excellent English presentation and writing skills.

Conditions of employment

The maximum salary is € 4.757,00 per month (gross income, salary scale 11) based on full-time employment.
