The Department of Human Movement Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, is offering a four-year PhD studentship focused on the neural control of gait stability in humans. The project involves work on cortico-muscular coherence during gait, and biomechanical measures of gait stability. The studentship is funded by an NWO VIDI Grant. Applicants are expected to have a strong background in neurosciences and/or (bio-)mechanics and a clear affinity for signal processing. A master degree before September 2018 is mandatory.

• A completed MSc degree in the field of movement science, neurosciences, (biomedical) engineering, or related fields;
• Very strong analytical and numerical skills;
• Experience with work on bipedal gait (be it robotic or human) is a pre;
• Experience in working with human subjects is a pre;
• Very good knowledge of software programming (MatLab, C++ or similar);
• Good writing skills;
• Good command of the English Language (mandatory);
• Good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.

The appointment will be initially for a period of 1 year. Provisional on satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, it will be extended for 3 years (the total duration is 4 years) in which case it should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance to courses and (international) meetings. PhD students are also expected to assist in teaching undergraduates.

The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and amounts € 2222,- gross per month in the first year up to € 2840,- in the fourth year (salary scale 85) based on a full-time employment.
