Functieomschrijving

Our modern way of life is critically dependent on efficient and secure transmission of data. The conventional method using the public key infrastructure to secure all this data is under increasing attack. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) offers a secure way of encrypting data, guaranteed by the laws of nature. The European Quantum flagship project Uniqorn is going to address the component- and network-level integration of communication concepts for QKD. Within this collaborative effort that brings together the key players in Europe, Eindhoven University of Technology will work closely with the Dutch foundry Smart Photonics in developing quantum-grade monolithically integrated indium-phosphide-based components. It will be the task of the PhD student to develop and demonstrate novel concepts for components such as balanced photo-detectors and optical mixers within the QKD framework. This work will build on and make use of the existing photonic integration platform of TU/e and Smart Photonics.

The PhD student will be part of the Photonic Integration group (phi.ele.tue.nl) of the Electrical Engineering department of Eindhoven University of Technology. This is an internationally oriented group which is leading in researching, developing and utilizing photonic integration with III-V semiconductors to realize cutting edge photonic devices and circuits. With our NanoLabNL facilities and our partnerships with companies like Smart Photonics, we are not only able to design these photonic ICs, but also to actually produce, characterize and analyze their performance.

We are looking for candidates who are interested in the application of integrated photonics for quantum optics.

Successful candidates should have good writing and documentation skills, excellent analytical and research capabilities and good communication skills. They must be able to organize their own work well and set and pursue their goals independently. The candidate will collaborate with an internationally renowned network of European academics and industry experts.</p
