The PhD research will be conducted under Prof. Dr. Eric Postma, Prof. Dr. Mykola Pechenizkiy, Dr. Henry Brighton, and Dr. Vlado Menkovski. It will deliver both long-term (thorough understanding of the notions of transparency in data science and machine learning) and mid-term results (frameworks, white papers, and best practices).

The successful candidate is expected to

            • Perform scientific research in the domain described;

            • Present results at (international) conferences;

            • Publish results in scientific journals;

            • Perform his/her research both on the JADS campus in 's-Hertogenbosch as well as the KPN office in Amsterdam;

            • Assist in teaching undergraduate/graduate courses;

            • Be willing to work at two locations. Mariënburg campus in 's-Hertogenbosch will be the candidate's main office, but he or she may be temporary stationed at KPN Amsterdam.

Candidates should

• Have an MSc in Data Science, Statistics, AI, Computational Cognitive Science or a related discipline;
• Have a strong interest in data science or AI research;
• Have excellent programming skills and be highly motivated, be rigorous and disciplined when developing algorithms and software according to high quality standards;
• Have good technical understanding of the statistical models used in data science and machine learning;
• Have knowledge of, or a willingness to familiarize themselves with, current research into decision making;
• Have a commitment to developing computational tools and techniques for helping people make better decisions;
• Be a fast learner, autonomous and creative, show dedication and be hard working;
• Possess good communication capabilities and be an efficient team worker;
• Be fluent in English, both spoken and written.

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

• A full-time position.
• The selected candidate will start with a contract for one year, concluded by an evaluation. Upon a positive outcome of the first-year evaluation, the candidate will be offered an employment contract for the remaining three years;
• A gross salary of € 2.266 per month in the first year increasing up to € 2.897 per month in the fourth year;
• A holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually);
• Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The University will apply for such an allowance on their behalf;

JADS New research initiative on data science

The Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) is the unique collaboration of two renowned universities bringing together their top academics to further the emerging and multidisciplinary academic field of data science. JADS not only offers nine academic educational programs (Bachelor, Master, PD.ENG, PhD and Professional) but also hosts three research centers; the Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC/e), the Data Science Center Tilburg (DSC/t), and the Data Science Center Den Bosch (DSC/db) at the new Mariënburg campus. The new Mariënburg campus on Data Science is located in a historic and beautiful former convent in the heart of the medieval city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and is within walking distance from the central train station.
