In the framework of DARE, the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University is recruiting an ESR / PhD researcher for a period of three years.
The position concerns: ESR 11 - Collective Political Voice: Persons with Disabilities in the Political Process
The objectives of this research project are:
To explore the barriers to political participation experienced by persons with disabilities in Europe. To propose practical recommendations for how such barriers can be overcome.
The project is inter-disciplinary. The law dimension will clarify the right to vote under international law and identify good practice in law. The social science dimension will identify barriers, which can be either legally or socially created, as well as good practice, and will ultimately aim to highlight steps which can be taken to remove such barriers and facilitate the political participation of persons with disabilities on an equal basis with others. The public policy dimension will identify ways in which the right to vote and participate can be moved up the agenda of public policy reform.
Applicants should indicate in their research proposal how they envisage completing this research project. Subject to the limits of this brief description, applicants have complete freedom to propose how to complete this research project, including which research methodologies to use.
This project will include two four month secondments at Leeds University and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (see: https://www.ifes.org/and http://electionaccess.org/en/) during the second or third year of the contract.
Duties:
Complete a research proposal for the research project to contain research objectives, description of research, methodology, proposed completion timeframe, originality of contribution and societal impact;
Submit a manuscript which meets the requirements to be awarded a Ph.D. by Maastricht University within the time frame of the contract;
Academic supervisors: Prof. Lisa Waddington (Maastricht University), Prof. Mark Priestley, Leeds University
Non-academic co-supervisor: Virginia Atkinson, International Foundation for Electoral Systems, Arlington VA (USA)

Fixed-term contract: 3 years.
We offer a 3 year full-time PhD contract. The first year will be a probation period. After a positive assessment the position will be extended for another 2 years. You will be employed by Maastricht University at the Faculty of Law.
The full-time gross monthly salary amounts to € 2.325,00 in the first year according to salary scale PhD (‘promovendus’), increasing to € 2.835,00 in the third year; on top of this there will be an 8% holiday and an 8,3% year-end allowance. Non-Dutch applicants could be eligible for a favourable tax treatment (30% rule).
The salary and terms of employment for this position will correspond to the provisions set out in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) and to the provisions of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. DARE is co-ordinated by the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the National University of Ireland, Galway, with the collaboration of 7 partner institutions: the Institute for Social and Political Sciences (Portugal), Maastricht University (Netherlands), University of Leeds (UK), the European Disability Forum, the European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities, the University of Iceland and Swiss Paraplegic Research.
The primary aim of DARE is to equip a new generation of researchers to respond to global challenges facing persons with disabilities and policy makers. Its goal is to give legitimacy, through research, to the lived experience of persons with disabilities, as a basis for law reform. Fifteen Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will be recruited across the network and will explore and develop recommendations for disability law and policy reform in light of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. DARE is an interdisciplinary research project – all ESRs will receive training in at least two disciplines related to disability rights – and all ESR projects are designed to be interdisciplinary in scope. All of the researchers will also have the opportunity to gain invaluable and funded work experience with leading civil society and public service organisations.
