Job description

Are you a passionate academic that is interested in themes in the area of organisational, sports and performance psychology? Do you generate impactful research in these areas? Are you able to stimulate (PhD) students to successfully master new knowledge and skills? This may be the position for you.

The Work and Organisational Psychology programme group of the University of Amsterdam has a vacancy for an assistant professor position (for .8 fte). You will contribute to knowledge development and application within organisational and sports psychology. You will teach and contribute to Bachelor’s and Master’s courses in the area of sports- and performance psychology and work and organisational psychology. You will also supervise Master’s and Bachelor’s students during their thesis and internship and co-supervise PhD students during their PhD research.

The W&O Psychology group provides a bachelor’s specialisation, a master’s programme with four specialised master’s tracks, and is involved in the Psychology Research Master’s programme. Our Bachelor’s programme contains courses on teams in organisations, recruitment and selection, work motivation and health, leadership and organisational culture, diversity in the workplace, and sport and performance psychology. Our Master’s tracks are aimed at Sports- and Performance Psychology, Coaching and Vitality, Human Resource and Career Management, and Consultancy and Organisational Development.

Project description

The vacancy of the Assistant Professor of Organisational and Sports Psychology at the University of Amsterdam consists of a package of tasks comprising the following four components: teaching (max. 55% of the time, depending on management and grant acquisition), research (min. 45% of the time), valorization, and administrative tasks.

More specifically, you will:
  • conduct high quality research fitting the programme and the master’s tracks of our group;
  • communicate about your research findings in high quality scientific journals, at conferences, and in practitioner-oriented outlets;
  • develop, coordinate, and teach courses (incl. lectures, working groups) and supervise students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s (most notably the sports and performance psychology track) and/or Research Master’s programme of Work- and Organisational Psychology;
  • co-supervise PhD students during their PhD research;
  • actively pursue (inter)national collaboration within and between disciplines;
  • attract externally funded research projects;
  • contribute to the group by participating in research and teaching committees, like organising research meetings, being a member of the ethics committee or instigating teaching intervision;
  • be active in translating your research to a broader audience and the field.

Requirements

You enjoy supervising and teaching groups of (international) students using a scientist-practitioner approach, you want to develop yourself as a teacher, and reflect on your own skills. You have excellent communication and social skills and you can work well in a team.

You have:
  • A PhD in work and organisational psychology, sports psychology, health psychology, organizational behavior, or related field (or are within 3 months of obtaining a PhD degree in these fields);
  • a research profile focusing on sports and performance psychology;
  • high quality publications in relevant fields and on topics that concern the functioning of individuals and/or groups at work and/or in sports;
  • experience with various research methods and analyses;
  • experience with teaching courses and individual thesis and internship supervision;
  • a teaching skills certification (BKO or Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs), or the willingness to enter a BKO trajectory;
  • English proficiency;
  • Dutch proficiency or gaining sufficient command of the Dutch language within a period of 2 years.

You are:
  • able to work together in different teams;
  • able to adapt to changing circumstances;
  • good in planning and organising different tasks and demands.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary employment contract of one year (.8 fte), with the prospect of a permanent contract following a positive assessment and barring altered circumstances.

Depending on your experience, the minimum salary is €4.332,- and the maximum salary is €5.929,- gross per month based on a 38-hour working week, in keeping with salary scale 11, as per the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
