PhD Position (1.0 FTE) Historical Tensions between International Business and National Taxation: A Challenge for Europe Today

The Erasmus University PhD project comprises a case study of the Anglo-Dutch Unilever since the merger in 1930. Against a background of major international ruptures (1930s Great Depression, Second World War, De-colonisation, the coming of the Iron Curtain and fall of the Berlin Wall) this project will focus on Unilever’s connections to other multinational companies in the UK and the Netherlands and particularly its relations with the Dutch and British governments.

We expect candidates to have:

• a completed Master’s degree or equivalent with a relevant specialization within the social sciences or humanities, e.g. economic/business history, international relations, international business law, international business (IB).
• familiarity with and keen interest in qualitative and quantitative research methods;
• independent thinking and critical analytical skills;
• good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary and intercultural academic communities;
• excellent oral and written communication skills in English (CEFR C1);
• command of the Dutch language is a precondition to work in the corporate and national archives (CEFR C1);
• motivation to carry out high level research and (a demonstrated ability to) publish in top peer reviewed international journals.

Employment starts by May 1st 2020. We offer an appointment as PhD student for a period of 1.5 year, which will be extended with a second term of 2.5 years if the candidate performs well.

Remuneration will be in accordance with the PhD scale set by the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Fulltime work will pay € 2.443.- gross in the first year, going up to € 3.122.- in the fourth year.

EUR offers a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end allowance of 8.3% per year and there are generous opportunities for additional education.

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The school has three departments: History,  Arts and Culture and Media & Communication.
