Job description

“Creating positive societal impact: the Erasmian way” is central in the strategy of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).

As our Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics (ECDA) platform engineer, ideally you start on 1 August 2023. In this role, you support the centre’s activities with designing, implementing, and maintaining a data platform infrastructure. A motivated self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, you work with our team on cutting-edge technologies and on building a scalable data infrastructure, on your own as well as with internal and external colleagues and stakeholders.

ECDA:
  • Facilitates hands-on education to students and executives.
  • Organises exclusive events, seminars, and summits
  • Offers a learning community that includes public and private organisations, academia and students
  • Facilitates multi-disciplinary research and innovation based on over 25 expert practices on data analytics, digitalisation and AI
  • Offers infrastructure for data, analytics, and AI in collaboration with technology partners

Your main tasks
  • Design, implement and maintain our data platform infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with other teams to understand requirements and provide solutions to meet those requirements.
  • Develop and maintain scripts and tools to automate data platform infrastructure tasks.
  • Ensure data platform security, availability, scalability and reliability.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data platform performance issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to other team members.
  • Identify and analyse problem areas in data platform services offered by ECDA and develop proposals for improvement.
  • Evaluate effectiveness and efficiency of ECDA data platform activities based on evidence and management information; optimise those with colleagues.
  • Develop processes that contribute to the quality of ECDA data platform services.
  • Participate in projects and working groups in ECDA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in computer science, engineering or related field
  • At least three years of experience in Linux, scripting (bash/python), Kubernetes, cloud databases and streaming technologies like Kafka or Apache NiFi
  • Strong understanding of data platform architecture and design
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure such as Azure (preferred), AWS or GCP
  • Knowledge of database technologies such as Snowflake, MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB
  • Familiarity with identity and access management technologies like SCIM, SAML and OIDC
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex issues
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken
  • Excellent organisational abilities and a methodical approach to work

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months with possibilty to extend.

We are offering a contract for 0.8 to 1.0 FTE, initially for a year, with the prospect of an extension based on good performance.

The conditions of employment correspond with the collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

Salary is subject to training and experience and may vary from a minimum of € 3,974 (scale 11 CAO NU) and up to a maximum of € 5,439 gross per month (scale 11 CAO NU), based on a full-time contract of 38 hours.

Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8 per cent, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3 per cent, and a considerate amount of vacation days.
