Job description

Medical Priority: Bleeding and Hemostasis
The Medical Priority Bleeding and Hemostasis is an international frontrunner in applying state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based proteomics in the area of benign hematology. We are a vibrant, international group of 35-40 colleagues (consisting of group leaders, postdocs, PhD students, and technicians) that study the various aspects of hemostatic networks. Our department has academic affiliations with high-ranking universities in the Netherlands, such as Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam. The department’s research program benefits from excellent research facilities, which include the latest technology for biomolecular mass spectrometry, imaging, and cell sorting.

Platelet (phospho)proteomes in Health and Disease
We are looking for a PhD student to join the mission of the Medical Priority Bleeding & Hemostasis of Sanquin Research to improve diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from acquired and congenital bleeding disorders.

Platelets are essential for primary hemostasis and dysfunctionality is associated with hemostatic disorders, including bleeding and thrombosis. In this PhD project, we aim to advance our molecular understanding of platelet biology through integrated complementary mass spectrometry-based approaches, including (phospho)proteomics, peptidomics, and metabolomics. In addition, we will relate platelet signaling mechanisms to genetic background and (rare) disease. We especially encourage applications of talented researchers with the skills and ambition to integrate ‘omics’-based profiling data with the ultimate goal to identify and study novel pathogenic mechanisms underlying platelet (dys)function.

Requirements

  • A MSc degree in (systems) biology and/or (bio)molecular/biomedical/pharmaceutical/bio-analytical sciences or equivalent. Pro-active and eager to learn and employ a variety of proteomics and bio-informatics approaches to address platelet biology;
  • Good communication skills in English;
  • The ability to work efficiently independently, but also in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary and international team composed of highly ambitious young researchers.

Conditions of Employment
We offer unique research opportunities in a dynamic environment. Nowhere else in the world will you find an organization that combines medical, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and scientific research under one roof. In addition to a challenging project in a multi-disciplinary and enthusiastic team, we offer:

  • Salary and working conditions conform CAO Sanquin;
  • Temporary position for the duration of 4 years (PhD student);
  • A full-time contract of 36 hours per week;
