Scientific Director of the KNIR (1.0 FTE)

The Scientific Director of the KNIR has the status of professor, with ample management experience and a large network within the Dutch academic community. The Director has an internationally acknowledged profile in research and teaching primarily focused on Rome/Italy. The Director has a broad interest in academia and knows how to connect disciplines and their practitioners. They know how to manage a small but complex Dutch academic organization outside of the Netherlands.

The Director initiates and secures the KNIR’s long-term mission, and safeguards the quality of its activities in the areas of research, teaching and culture. The Director guides two programmes from a wide perspective: the interuniversity humanities programme and the additional activities for other target groups. The Director has a representative personality with authority and the power to unite. She/he respects peer relationships, is an inspirational leader and knows how to encourage the various categories of staff in the institute. A large network enables the Director to encourage national colleagues to actively use the opportunities that the KNIR offers to researchers and students.

Job description
The Scientific Director is ultimately responsible for the overall policy, the coordination of the academic activities and the day-to-day affairs of the institute. This means that the Director:
- carries out the KNIR’s mission, including periodical evaluation and adjustment
- executes the personnel, financial and housing policies together with the Director of Operational Management within a power of attorney granted by the UG
- maintains contact with the Board of the University of Groningen, the Scientific Advisory Council, the Board of the Dutch Scientific Institutes Abroad (NWIB) and the universities and institutes of higher education, research and culture in the Netherlands and Italy that the KNIR works with
- represents the KNIR and maintains relationships between the institute and its environment in the Netherlands and Italy
- bears the ultimate responsibility for the teaching programmes and the research carried out in the KNIR
- actively contributes to the KNIR’s teaching programme
- contributes to the supervision of students and researchers staying at the KNIR
- conducts academic research and publishes the results according to arrangements to be made and evaluated periodically
- organizes academic meetings in the context of the research profile of the KNIR.
- bears the ultimate responsibility for the instruments used to carry out and facilitate the KNIR’s mission, in particular the scholarships, the library and the communication strategy.

- demonstrable managerial qualities
- managerial and organizational experience (including in finance and personnel)
- an internationally acknowledged teaching/research profile with interdisciplinary elements and at least a strong liking for issues related to Rome/Italy
- an excellent command of Dutch, Italian and English
- social skills: team player and networker.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a salary in accordance with the candidate’s current position, supplemented with a foreign residence allowance (KNIR allowance scheme 2012)
- a full-time position (1.0 FTE)
- the Scientific Director is appointed by the UG
- a term of appointment for 5 years.

The Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) encourages contact between Dutch researchers and the Italian and foreign academic institutions in Rome. The KNIR conducts an interuniversity teaching and research programme, supervised by the University of Groningen (UG). The KNIR focuses academically on the humanities, paying special attention to archaeology, art history and history. A Scientific Advisory Council based in the Netherlands advises the KNIR on its interuniversity programme. It is made up of staff members from the participating universities and representatives of non-university bodies.
In addition to its interuniversity programme in the humanities, the KNIR organizes activities targeted at other groups, thus broadening its significance for other disciplines. The mutual benefits emerging from this enrich the students and lecturers involved.
The KNIR has ample facilities to accommodate and support teaching and research activities, such as an extensive library, multifunctional meeting rooms and guest accommodation. These facilities can be used for academic meetings and courses in all academic areas.

The KNIR has four academic staff members (4 FTE) and eight support staff members (7.35 FTE), guided by a Scientific Director and a Director of Operational Management, the latter based in Groningen. The staff members are responsible for the organization and execution of all activities in the stately institute building near the Villa Borghese city park in Rome, which can accommodate 30 guests. The KNIR uses several services provided by the University of Groningen for its operational management.
The KNIR staff is due to expand gradually alongside the anticipated growth of activities for additional target groups. Until now, the growth of activities has been achieved by the flexible deployment of academic staff from a wide range of disciplines, and where necessary, by an expansion of the support staff.
