The Reactor Institute Delft, RID, operates a 2.3 MW nuclear research reactor and develops and innovates various beamline instruments for fundamental and applied materials science. Furthermore, the reactor is used to irradiate samples and produce radionuclides for medical and research applications. With the completion of the major update program OYSTER, the RID reactor will operate with a Cold Neutron Source, which makes the beamline instruments even more sensitive and widely applicable. As a result the RID infrastructure can grow to accommodate more users and serve more research themes. The RID is the largest centre in the Netherlands for occupational education and training in the field of nuclear radiation protection. RID also functions as the Dutch knowledge center of ionizing radiation, and safe handling of radiation.The RID employs about 65 fte instrument scientists and support staff.

The reactor is first and foremost used by the department of Radiation Science & Technology in Delft. This scientific department, headed by the department head, has unique expertise in using ionizing radiation such as positrons and neutrons for research and academic education, and has a strong focus on Nuclear Energy, Materials Science and Health Technology. It is of paramount importance that the RID reactor supports vibrant science and education, requiring close collaboration with the RST head of department.
The Director RID is responsible for the management of the Institute, the operation of the reactor under the Nuclear Energy Act (Kern Energie Wet) and the efficient use of the Institute’s assets. The Director is accountable for the nuclear license-related matters to the University Board, for all other matters to the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The appointee will have direct responsibility for the safe operation of the reactor and for the relations with national and international supervisory bodies (ANVS, the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation protection (licensing and independent supervisor) and the IAEA, International Atomic Energy Agency). The appointee will stimulate the research on RID-related instruments and measuring methods, raises external funding for the reactor and its operations, and will work with the RST department on programmatic cohesion and coordination of the scientific and supporting activities. The Director will strengthen collaboration and represent the RID within TU Delft as well as with national and international partners in academia, research institutes and reactor facilities, industry, government, and funding organisations such as international scientific organisations or the European Commission framework.
The candidate aims for a strong (inter)national positioning of the RID as a large scientific facility and in close cooperation with the RST department.
