Department

At CSTM, we focus on assessing and optimizing governance, emphasizing sustainable development, environmental quality and resilience, social inclusiveness, and (technological) innovation. CSTM roots back to 1988 and consists of a multidisciplinary team with expertise in Policy studies & transition; Law & regulation, and Geographic economics. CSTM scholars practice research that is evidenced based, theoretically grounded, applied, interdisciplinary and multi-methodological. Across the past decades, CSTM has focused upon the policy domains of water, energy, climate change and responsible production and consumption.

While continuing to do so, CSTM's attention will, in the coming years include the nexus challenge, the occurring tension between societal claims upon water, energy, food and land, within relevant socio ecological systems and the rurban challenge: the increasing urban populations and urban sprawl that influences rural areas, comes with nexus tensions, can lead to inequities and calls for spatio-social sustainability analysis and design (wherein bio-circular economy, energy and water are integrated).

High Tech and Human Touch

Join the university of technology that puts people first. Create new possibilities for yourself, your colleagues and society as a whole. Using modern technology and science to drive innovation, change and progress. That’s what it means to work at the University of Twente.
