PhD candidate/Lecturer in Economics (1.0 FTE)

Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) is looking for a PhD candidate/Lecturer in Economics. Over a period of six years, you will conduct doctoral research and you will teach students. This means that you will spend 60% of your time on your research and 40% on teaching. The exact details of your schedule will be determined in close consultation between you, your supervisors and our education coordinators. The teaching schedule may vary per period, but will be determined well in advance. Working time is reserved for training and development, amongst others for obtaining your University Teaching Qualification and for PhD courses.

Within the period of six years, the progress of your research and your work as a teacher will be evaluated at predetermined moments. Details about research objectives, methods, and deadlines will be set in consultation with your supervisors. We are particularly interested in researchers eager to examine the micro-level determinants of the adoption of green technologies’ adoption and environmentally conscious consumption. Potential research questions include: what are the characteristics and motives of firms adopting green technologies, and what are the (expected) environmental and economic impacts of these technologies, vis-à-vis other types of technologies? What is the role of attitudes in influencing the willingness of consumers to take up and pay for environmentally friendly consumption? To what extent do these differ between developed and developing countries? You will actively collaborate with experts from innovation, development, labour economics, and political economy.

We are looking for a talented researcher, with passion for teaching, who meets the following requirements:

• a Master’s degree (to be obtained before 1 August 2023) in economics, econometrics, statistics, mathematics, engineering, physics, or quantitative social sciences (a research master’s degree is preferred);
• eager to conduct innovative research, resulting in a PhD degree within six years;
• strong quantitative skills;
• programming skills, e.g. strong command of Stata, R, and/or Python;
• ability to work independently as well as in a team;
• excellent communication skills and writing skills in English;
• willing to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (BKO in Dutch) (unless the candidate already holds this qualification).
