Estuarine Ecologist (24 hours)

We are looking for
We are looking for an excellent, highly motivated scientist with a PhD degree in (estuarine) ecology or equivalent and with experience in multidisciplinary research. You should have a keen interest in cutting-edge fundamental, process-oriented research in the estuarine environment, with an eye for the potential of translating this knowledge towards application. You will be working in an interdisciplinary context, together with other NIOZ-WMR researchers aiming to build a research program via the competitive acquisition of external funds from national and European funding agencies to support your research program. You should have proven excellence and scientific qualities, in line with the status of your career. You are keen to interact with PhD's, undergraduate students and technicians. Experience in outreach of your research to local and regional communities and authorities is required. As you will have many interactions with local and regional stakeholders, good command of spoken and written Dutch is essential, as well as having very well-developed social skills.

In this role you:

• Translate research questions into clear project proposals and carry them out in a multidisciplinary project team.
• Do field, desk and experimental research and calculate scenarios, analyze data and report on it.
• Fulfill an important role in bridging practice, policy and applied scientific research and to this end you maintain a network in the Southwest Delta.
• Report and advise clients, other stakeholders and colleagues.
• Contribute to the acquisition of new research and, where necessary, develop initiatives
• in that area.
• Write project reports and regularly publish the results of your research in scientific
• journals and/or present them at conferences/symposia.

You have :

• A completed relevant academic education in the natural sciences or in the life sciences;
• Preferably a doctor's degree in a field relevant to this position
• (Some) Experience with project work and work experience within ecological estuaries and delta research;
• Experience with processing, elaborating, statistically analyzing and interpreting ecological datasets;
• The ability to record the research in clear and high-quality reports and advice.
• A good command of the Dutch and English language (level C1) in word and writing.

Employed 24 hours by Wageningen Marine Research and in conjunction with the NIOZ vacancy Estuarine ecologist - Tenure Track (nioz.nl) with an employment contract by NIOZ for 16 hours.

The term of employment is initially 1 year and will be extended depending on the availability of research projects and performance. We intend to have a long (and if possible permanent) working relationship with each other. Depending on your experience, we offer a market-based salary of up to € 4.809,- for a full working week of 36 hours in accordance with CAO Wageningen Research (Hay profile WO Researcher 4/ scale 10)

We are
Wageningen Marine Research (WMR, part of Wageningen University and Research) is a leading marine ecological research institute employing approximately 190 people and working from three locations: IJmuiden, Den Helder and Yerseke.

From the location in Yerseke, the department of Estuarine and Delta Systems conduct research within the Southwest Delta. This research focusses on how the interplay between organisms, hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics and biochemistry shapes the estuarine and delta environment in the context of natural and human-induced environmental changes. An important focus of our research is how these abiotic-biotic interactions create value for society, following for examples of the "Building with Nature" paradigm or investigating sustainable sources of marine biomass for food.
