The Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE & IS), one of the nine departments at the TU/e, aims to take a leadership role in supporting industry, government and society in their responsible adoption and effective implementation of key enabling technologies that address grand societal challenges. The mission of the Department is to generate high-quality scientific progress and output, offer excellent educational programs, and create technology-based impact for society and industry, combining disciplinary and multidisciplinary excellence at the interplay of technological sciences, social sciences and the humanities. The Department hosts a rich collection of disciplinary perspectives from social sciences and humanities, including philosophy, sociology, psychology, economics up to operations research, management, and entrepreneurship.
Dean of the department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences
TU/e is seeking to appoint a new Dean who will further build upon the strengths of the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences through an inspiring vision to effectively guide the Department through growth, and stimulate effective cooperation and interactions between research, education, impact, and supporting processes.
As a member of the Consultative Council and the Doctorate Board, the Dean contributes to determining the strategy, course and development of TU/e. The Dean acts together with the Executive Board and fellow Deans. The TU/e mission, vision and strategy are translated into a multi-year policy for the Department.
The Dean implements the Department agenda together with the Department Board. The Department Board consists of the Dean, two Vice Deans and a Managing Director. The Dean chairs the Department Board, which holds final and integral responsibility for the Department's education, research, societal impact, and operations.
The Dean represents the TU/e and the Department to various internal and external stakeholders, acts in a diplomatic way within the force field of the university and maintains good contacts with adjacent disciplines. To the outside world, the Dean improves the national and international visibility. This also calls for modern leadership by creating a broad base of research program leaders to represent the department.
The Dean is keen to represent the Department within and outside the university and position it as an internationally leading department in Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences with respect to research and education. The successful candidate takes responsibility for department and university initiatives and works on the further development and implementation of the strategy within the department. The Dean takes the lead and contributes your own vision that is consistent with the overarching university vision and strategy. They contribute proactively and constructively to the governance and strategic development of TU/e and have an affinity with organisational development.
As a leader, the Dean stimulates mutual involvement in the department by being visible and investing in an open and good relationship with the academic community, with professional staff members and with the department council. The Dean takes the interests of all groups into consideration when making decisions. Through connecting leadership, they encourage collaboration among people and different parts of the department and collaboration with other departments, institutions, and support services and create synergy across disciplinary borders.
Requirements
The Dean is an established scientist (full professor) with an active engineering background, experience in one of the domains of the department and affinity with all domains. The successful candidate has an existing strong track record in shaping multi-disciplinary research on the basis of disciplinary excellence to further strengthen the systems approach of the department. They have an existing international and national network within and outside of academia and they can make new connections between departments and academic and societal actors. In previous career steps, the Dean has developed managerial qualities and has shown that you can lead in a complex, knowledge-intensive environment. The management and leadership style is characterised by integrity, empathy, open dialogue, transparency, and the ability to build bridges as well as cut through knots. The Dean listens to various perspectives, weighs them, makes informed decisions, and creates broad support. The successful candidate has a natural focus on talent scouting and strongly encourages talent and leadership development with a warm heart for diversity and inclusion, and an eye for social safety. The Dean encourages team spirit, collegiality and academic citizenship to create a thriving community.
Conditions of employment
Appointment: The appointment is for a period of four years, with the possibility of reappointment. In addition, the Dean will be appointed to the position of permanent Professor by the Executive Board. TU/e has adopted an active policy to increase the number of female scientists across all disciplines of the university. Equally, TU/e strives for a diverse composition of Department Boards. Therefore, female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
Remuneration: The position is valued according to the associated professor salary scale, and will, in addition, receive an administration allowance for fulfilling the role of Dean.
