Job description

The University College Groningen (UCG) is a faculty of the University of Groningen that started a Liberal Arts and Sciences programme in September 2014. The UCG Liberal Arts and Sciences programme offers broad academic education with a focus on engagement to societal challenges through project-based education and interdisciplinary integration. The UCG community is internationally oriented, with staff and students from across the globe. Learning environments are generally small scale and interactive.

Position:

We are looking for a lecturer for the course “Policy and Principles of Private Law'” in the Social Sciences major. Policy and Principles of Private Law focuses on the key concepts of private law and the relevant interests at stake. The course addresses property law, contract law, tort law and mediation and arbitration. The course provides students insight into the reasoning in private law on the basis of its key concepts and the relevant interests. The course includes core questions of private law such as: (i) what are the requirements for the formation of a contract?; (ii) what is strict liability?; (iii) how can ownership be transferred?

The course is scheduled for block one of the academic year 2023/24 (September to November 2023). It is an option to teach the course in subsequent academic years.

Requirements

UCG is looking for a candidate with the following credentials:

• has a PhD in the social sciences with a focus on Policy and Principles of Private Law
• has teaching experience, good student evaluations and preferably a University Teaching Qualification
• preferably has a (demonstrable) affinity/ experience in working in an interdisciplinary setting
• has near-native English proficiency
• is able to demonstrate experience with educational innovation and active learning methods.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 Months.

The University of Groningen offers a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,974 to a maximum of € 5,439 (salary scale 11) gross per month for a full-time position. The gross salary is excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
