PhD positions in the Institute for the Study of Culture (2.7 FTE)

The Graduate School for the Humanities offers 3 PhD positions (for 4 years) in the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG). As a PhD candidate, you are committed to conducting independent and original scientific research, to report on this research in international publications and presentations, and to present the final results of the research in a PhD dissertation.

Before you apply you have gained the signed approval, in principle, of your CV + research proposal, from an intended supervisor, i.e. a full professor or an associate professor with ius promovendi at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen, via the appended form. This is a necessary precondition for the consideration of your application.

We are looking for talented and ambitious researchers in the relevant disciplines.

Your qualifications are:
• a completed master's degree in one of the five areas mentioned above, with an excellent academic record (MA thesis grade: min. 8/10)
• proven research abilities and affinity with the research topic
• excellent command of English and good academic writing skills.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
• a salary of € 2,325 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,972 gross per month in the fourth year, based on a full-time position (1.0 FTE). The 0.9 FTE appointment (per PhD) is temporary for a specified period of four years. Each position requires residence in Groningen and must yield a PhD dissertation
• you first will be appointed for 18 months. After 12 months, an assessment will take place of your results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.

Start date: 1 September 2019, in principle.

1. A full CV demonstrating academic excellence, including publications and presentations (if applicable), and a copy of the data page of your passport. Furthermore a certified copy or scan of your MA diploma (or equivalent) and academic record (all this in just one file!)

3. A cover letter introducing yourself, describing your motivation and suitability to conduct this particular research project, and locating your research within one of the research centres

A research proposal, focusing on the central research question to be addressed and the proposed method of approaching and answering this question (no more than (!) 1500 words, tables and references excluded, and a project title).
