Job description

The Erasmus University Rotterdam has recently started with a comprehensive Academic Outreach and Advancement Programme as one of the ways to implement our new strategy “The Erasmian Way, Creating Positive Societal Impact”. The goal of this programme is to increase the proportion of young people from underrepresented groups attending higher education, and to improve and support their wellbeing and success at university.

The programme exists of several Action Lines. We aim to 1) elaborate and strengthen our connection with underrepresented primary and secondary school pupils and students in the greater Rotterdam area through several outreach activities, 2) expand and improve student-centered support in the pre-enrollment phase and at EUR for these groups and 3) build new blocks by enabling EUR scientist, teachers, and students to develop, implement and research equity-based opportunity programmes and activities.

Within Action Line 1, we intend to expand the current offer of outreach activities and create an ‘academic support line’. In collaboration with primary and secondary schools we will identify talented pupils from underrepresented backgrounds to become part of a cohort that will be offered consecutive tailored interventions provided by the EUR and external stakeholders. The pupils get a fair chance throughout their school career, while at the same time providing EUR with insight in the experiences and mechanisms of the underrepresented groups in their way to higher education.

The Academic Outreach and Advancement Programme is part of the D&I Office, in close cooperation with the Student Well-being Programme, the Erasmus Science Hub that introduces school children to science and research, and the Erasmus Ambassadors Office that provides study information to secondary school pupils.

In close collaboration with the project manager of the Academic Outreach and Advancement Programme, your duties as a Coordinator Academic Support Line are twofold. First, you will set up and coordinate the academic support line, which involves:

  • Working together with Science Hub and the Erasmus Ambassadors Office to decide on and to set up outreach activities offered within the academic support line;
  • Communicating and liaising with participating schools and relevant external stakeholders;
  • Determining eligibility criteria for schools and talented pupils;
  • Determining key performance indices to examine the effectiveness the academic support line;
  • Ensure that all activities are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget, including the financial administration of the project.

Second, you will be (co-)supervising research activities conducted in Action Line 1, focusing on the (effect) evaluation of current outreach activities and the academic support line. This involves:

  • Supervising two PhD students on research activities performed in Action Line 1;
  • Setting up a cohort study design;
  • Coordinating executing of the cohort study, working together with PhD students and participating schools;
  • Communicating findings within EUR, with stakeholders, and to (inter)national academic audiences.
