Job description

The Amsterdam University Medical Center (location AMC, Amsterdam) has a vacancy for a PhD student or postdoc at the Tytgat Institute for Liver and intestinal Research. The aim of the project is to investigate whether inhibition of the bile acid transporter NTCP can be used to treat NAFLD/NASH. Furthermore, the project aims to understand bile acid signalling related to liver inflammation and fat accumulation in great detail. We use state-of-the-art molecular/cellular ex-vivo techniques combined with genetic models and diet-induced models for metabolic diseases and/or bile acid transport.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly talented PhD student with a Master’s degree in a field related to (medical) biology or biochemistry and/or a postdoc with a PhD in metabolism/signalling obtained no longer than 2 years ago and a high motivation to excel in research. You have a keen interest in understanding the molecular basis of hepatic (patho)physiology and its (future) implications for the clinic, article 9 or similar FELASA qualifications, and are proficient in English.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months, with the prospect of extending the contract upon good performance. The PhD student will be offered an extension of the contract up to 4 years in total, when functioning properly.

  • The maximum gross monthly salary for a PHD candidate based on a 36-hour work week in the first year is € 2.495,- and increases up to the fourth year to € 3.196,- (scale OIO CAO UMC).
  • The maximum gross monthly salary for a Postdoc based on a 36-hour work week is between € 2.911,- and € 4.615,- (scale 10 CAO UMC).
  • The base salary does not include holiday pay (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%). 
  • We initially offer a contract for 12 months, with the prospect of extending the contract upon good performance. The PhD student will be offered an extension of the contract up to 4 years in total, when functioning properly.
  • The project will be performed at the Tytgat Institute for Liver and Intestinal Research, which is currently based at the Meibergdreef (location AMC).

You will be contracted by AMC Medical Research, and work in a team based in the Tytgat institute for Liver and Intestinal Research. The liver and intestinal research of the AMC is concentrated in this department which is affiliated with the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology. Housing more than 70 basic and clinical scientists, we are one of the leading international research centers in gastroenterology and hepatology. Research in the Tytgat Institute is both fundamental and translational, but always built on a clinical question, providing results that can be translated into clinical practice. Extensive collaboration between physicians and researchers ensures a close link between the clinic and basic research. Daily supervision will be by Dr. Stan F.J. van de Graaf.
