Our mission is to be a top-ranking faculty with both excellent education and world-quality research, with a strong international orientation, firmly rooted in the north of the Netherlands. We create knowledge & new insights and share its benefits with society. We work at a modern, broad and international institution, educating over 5,000 Dutch and international students to become forward-looking, articulate and independent academics and professionals. We form a hardworking and diverse team of 700 staff members.

The Department of International Relations and International Organization (IRIO) is committed to top-tier research combined with high quality education. Students and staff are drawn to studying international relations and the role of international organization in an integrated manner from historical, political, economic and legal angles. The Bachelor (https://www.rug.nl/bachelors/international-relations-and-international-organization/?lang=en) and Master degree programs (https://www.rug.nl/masters/international-relations-60-ec/?lang=en) are taught in English. Additionally, the Department contributes to the EMJMD 2-year Master degree program in Humanitarian Action, coordinated by the Network on Humanitarian Action (NOHA), and the Research Master in International Relations with a specialization in Modern History. Research in the department is organized through the Centre for IR Research (CIRR) around five chairs, respectively in: History & Theory of IR; IR and Security Studies; International Political Economy (IPE); History & Theory of European Integration; and Global International Relations.

What will you be working on?

The position combines teaching (60%) and research (40%) in the field of International Relations and Humanitarian Action in the Chair group of Global International Relations.

In teaching, you are expected to provide BA- and MA-level courses, as well as support PhD supervision. Depending on your disciplinary background, you will be asked to teach specialized courses for the MA IR and in the EMJMD 2-year MA programme on “International Humanitarian Action” (https://www.rug.nl/masters/international-humanitarian-action-120-ec/?lang=en). Participation in managerial committees related to the organization of the degree programmes will be expected. In general, you could contribute to basic introductory courses in areas such as IR Theory, Policy and Governance, History of International Relations, and International Politics.

In terms of research, you are expected to contribute to the development of innovative research projects focusing on disasters of various origins (from acts of terrorism and conflict, to major industrial accidents, technological failures, earthquakes, droughts, floods, etc.).

You will develop your own research projects (both individually and in small teams) and will contribute to wider research initiatives within the University and beyond. We expect that you develop a research funding plan to attract external funding in the short/medium term.
