As Vice-Dean you will help accomplish our ambitions through planning, directing, and implementing programs, policies and procedures for M&CS in partnership with the other members of the department board (and its advisors). You will help develop the department strategy and directing efforts to achieve its goals:

• Formulate a vision regarding the future profile of the department and its individual disciplines. You will foster the development oriented mindset, as well as inspire and respond to modernization and innovation in these specific scientific areas;
• Position the department within the university and enthusiastically seek opportunities for joint initiatives with other departments and research groups in the university and beyond, in line with external developments. You will catalyze synergy between the various research themes to intensify existing (inter)national partnerships;
• Foster entrepreneurial scientifical initiatives in the Brainport region: act pro-active within regional, national and international networks. Develop new partnerships and show leadership regarding external developments;
• Renew strategic human resources management and encourage talent development (including mentoring and coaching scientific staff) within the department and conform to university-wide initiatives;
• Facilitate growth in student numbers and innovation in the education programs without increasing workload.

The ambition and challenges of M&CS

The departmental board focus on five main topics for the next few years: the reduction of workload, strengthening the (research) position of M&CS, improve the support processes for the department, further increase diversity, and improve governance towards proactive and fast decision making.
The strengthening of the position of M&CS should be reached via stronger collaboration with TU/e departments & institutes, building external research consortia with organizations and industry, increase valorization efforts through virtual and physical (science) labs , develop and align research lines (from fundamental to applied and back), implementing the new bachelor program with challenged-based learning elements, and support a possible scale jump. The scale jump is the TU/e ambition of doubling the number of master's, PhD’s, and EngD’s degree graduates by 2032 to meet the rapidly growing need of the Brainport region for engineers. The strongest increase is anticipated in master's programs in the fields of greatest need, including computer science (part of the department of M&CS).

As a member of the collegially-operating Department Board, the vice-dean can (temporarily) replace the dean and support the dean in leading the department while serving the general interests of the department. The vice-dean will agree with the dean on a portfolio of responsibilities. In M&CS this is a part-time position (0.6 fte). The candidate for vice-dean

• Is a leader both as an individual and as a scientist with a clear affiliation – exercise authority within one of the Computer or Data Science disciplines;
• Is a full professor in one of the disciplines related to Computer Sciences/Data Science;
• Has a strong research track-record: oversees one or more domains in terms of scope and content and knows the relative position of the domain(s) (inter)nationally;
• Has ample experience in education: is aware of current development in higher education and the teaching methods of the Bachelor College and the Graduate School;
• Has an open and constructive attitude, connecting people and raising enthusiasm. Have good communication skills;
• Has been shown or has the potential to operate effectively within the larger context of the university, to connect to the Executive Board, and to the boards of the other departments;
• Enjoys recognition in the academic world at TU/e and beyond, and has broad support among department staff;
• Has a demonstrable track record as manager, preferably gained in complex, knowledge-intensive organizations with high-quality professionals. They have, for example, previously served as program director, as cluster chair, or in another (education) management position in the department or university;
• Is a collaborator: can make trade-offs, takes initiatives and makes and implements decisions;
• Has a strong network in national and international organizations within one or more of the domains.

Given the challenges mentioned above, the role is professional, managerial and administrative in nature and requires you to be familiar with the Dutch system of scientific education and research. We offer a full time position as full professor with 0.6fte in the position of Vice-Dean. The position has been assigned a scale HGL 1 of the table of salaries applicable to the Collective Agreement of Dutch Universities. In principle, the vice-dean is appointed for a period of four years, after which her/his professorship can be extended at the TU/e, with a possibility of renewal for an additional four years.

The TU/e currently has nine departments, with over 13,000 students in total. Our executive board governs and leads the university, while our departmental boards are in charge of the departments. The board of a department consist of a departmental dean, the vice-dean and the managing director. Program directors and a student member advises the departmental board. The departmental board is responsible for the operational and policy matters relating to the budget and staff policy. We are currently looking for a vice-dean at the department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

With over 110 (assistant, associate and full) professors, almost 300 PhD and EngD students, about 1500 Bachelor students and 1000 Master students, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (M&CS) is the largest department of the TU/e. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (M&CS) at TU/e is an ambitious and inclusive department, with nearly 50% of our employees being international. M&CS has defined three domains covering all research and education activities: Mathematics, Computer Science and Data Science (including AI).

We aim to contribute to science and innovation in and beyond the region by performing top-level fundamental and applied research, offering high-quality educational programs, and maintaining strong ties with society and industry. A significant amount of research is done in close collaboration with Brainport’s large high-tech companies, (research) organizations and institutes, and many small/medium enterprises. The department’s close collaborations and relationships within the Brainport region enables staff and students to contribute directly to the technological innovations and developments with real-world relevance. The department has produced a number of successful spin-offs, participates in many national and international research consortia, and is highly successful in obtaining national and European grant funding.
