The Delta Institute for Theoretical Physics invites applications for postdoc position to start in Spring of 2019, in the groups of Jácome Armas (Amsterdam), Jan de Boer (Amsterdam) and Luca Giomi (Leiden).
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with an interest in hydrodynamics both in soft condensed matter physics and high energy physics. The aim of the project is to use recently developed methods in hydrodynamics in the above fields and to study topological properties of hydrodynamic modes in a variety of fluid models with different symmetries. You will help establish a new collaboration between Jácome Armas, Jan de Boer from the string theory group at the University of Amsterdam and Luca Giomi from the soft condensed matter group at Leiden University.
A PhD in Physics or an equivalent degree is required to be considered for this position. Knowledge of hydrodynamics in soft matter or high-energy physics is required. You need to possess excellent English communication skills. We encourage applications from underrepresented groups in STEM.
The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 2 years.
Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2,709 to €4,274 gross per month. The Collective Labour Agreement (Cao) of Dutch Universities is applicable. Favourable tax agreement may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
With over 5,000 employees, 30,000 students and a budget of more than 600 million euros, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is an intellectual hub within the Netherlands. Teaching and research at the UvA are conducted within seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business, Law, Science, Medicine and Dentistry. Housed on four city campuses in or near the heart of Amsterdam, where disciplines come together and interact, the faculties have close links with thousands of researchers and hundreds of institutions at home and abroad.
The UvA’s students and employees are independent thinkers, competent rebels who dare to question dogmas and aren’t satisfied with easy answers and standard solutions. To work at the UvA is to work in an independent, creative, innovative and international climate characterised by an open atmosphere and a genuine engagement with the city of Amsterdam and society.
The Delta Institute for Theoretical Physics unites the existing institutes for theoretical physics of the University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, and Utrecht University. The associated scientists are determined to continue their tradition of scientific excellence by attacking the grand challenges of modern physics and by attracting a new generation of top talent. You will be based at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Amsterdam. The Institute of Physics (IoP) of the Amsterdam Faculty of Science combines the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute (WZI), the Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITFA) and the Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEF) and is one of the large research institutes of the faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam.
