Job description

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Networks & Optimization research group for a talented postdoctoral researcher in the area of discrete and continuous optimization.

Job description
The candidate will be expected to perform independent research and publish in high quality conferences and journals. There are no teaching obligations at CWI, though the candidate may be asked to help with the organization of reading groups and seminars.

The research will be supported by the ERC grant "Towards a Quantitative Theory of Integer Programming". A principal goal of this project is to develop a theory capable of explaining the performance of the many techniques used to solve integer programs, such branch & bound, cutting planes, fast LP solving and rounding heuristics. Complementary to this goal, the project aims to make progress on related fundamental open problems in the context of LP, IP and discrepancy theory. For more information, please visit the project website: https://homepages.cwi.nl/~dadush/erc/erc.html.

The candidate will be expected to help advance the goals of the project together with their own personal research agenda.

Requirements

Candidates are required to have a PhD degree (by or close to the starting date) in computer science, mathematics and a strong background in at least one of the following areas: discrete & continuous optimization, high dimensional geometry and probability, approximation algorithms or fixed parameter tractability. Research experience within the subject areas of integer programming, linear programming or discrepancy theory is a plus. Candidates are expected to have an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.

The candidate must be available for an appointment of two years.

Diversity code
CWI encourages a diverse workforce: we endeavour to develop talent and creativity by bringing people from different backgrounds and cultures together. We recruit and select based on capabilities and talent. We strongly encourage everyone with the appropriate qualifications to apply for the vacancy, regardless of age, gender, origin, sexual orientation or physical abilities.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 24 months.

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary for an employee on a full time basis, depending on relevant work experience, ranges from € 3,704 to € 4,515. The appointment will be for a period of at least two years. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling.

Companies looking to collaborate can work together with brilliant students, scientists and fellow entrepreneurs. Collectively they develop revolutionary solutions for today's issues and tomorrow's challenges.

Department

In today's society, complex systems surround us. From transport and traffic, to behavioral economics and operations management, real-world applications often demand that we identify simple, optimal solutions among a huge set of possibilities. Our research group Networks and Optimization (N&O) does fundamental research to tackle such challenging optimization problems.
