Job description

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research in the field of Crisis Management, with a particular emphasis on the response and community resilience to recurrent, climate-change induced crises and emergencies;
  • Obtain a PhD by publishing a monograph or four articles in leading journals on security and global affairs within a four-, maximum six-year timeframe;
  • Present their work to both academic and professional audiences;
  • Contribute when applicable to the Dutch or international public debate on crisis management and emergency response;
  • Demonstrabe ability to work in a highly independent, organized and result-oriented fashion;
  • Demonstrate good time-management skills;
  • Build an (inter)national network that spans both academics and policymakers/practitioners working on topics related to crisis research;
  • Actively participate in discussions at the Institute and the research group Crisis Governance on research and innovation;
  • Follow PhD courses based on an individual training and supervision plan.

Requirements

Selection Criteria
  • Research Master's degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Sociology, Organization Studies, Policy Studies, Public Health Policy and Management or another field with direct relevance for the interdisciplinary research carried out within the field of crisis management;
  • Demonstrable ability and enthusiasm for research at the intersection of conceptual and policy-oriented research (e.g. high grade for Master's thesis, publications and evidence of policy-oriented research) in the field of crises and crisis management;
  • An extensive network in, and/or good demonstrable knowledge of the Dutch crisis and emergency management landscape;
  • Excellent writing skills, as evidenced in (published) papers, blogs, or academic output;
  • Excellent command of English and Dutch.

Conditions of employment

Terms and conditions
The appointment as a PhD candidate will be for a period of six years (initially for a period of one year with an extension of five years after positive evaluation of progress and skills development) leading to the successful completion of a PhD thesis. The appointment will be under the terms of the CAO (Collective Labour Agreement) of Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary is set on € 2.541,- in the first year, increasing to € 3.247,- gross per month in the final year.

Our institute
The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a scientific institute that focuses on multidisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. ISGA analyses and studies issues in a coherent way from their local transnational and global impact.

Researchers at our institute are engaged in interdisciplinary research and teaching within the international scientific field of security studies. The approach to issues of security is glocal, that is to say that the local, national, transnational and global impact are studied and analysed in conjunction with each other.

ISGA operates from The Hague, the third major city of the Netherlands, center of national governance and International City of Peace, Justice and Security.
