Research Assistant at NIDI / KNAW

What you'll do
The Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) currently has a vacancy for a Junior Researcher.

We are looking for a new team member who can assist with the daily operations of the Central Hub and work with the newly collected GGS data. This will include:

• processing the newly collected survey data in Stata and further developing procedures for checking the data quality;
• developing products for facilitating and promoting the use of GGS data (e.g., creating user-friendly Stata syntax and variables);
• updating and managing the GGP bibliography;
• demonstrating the use and impact of the data to various stakeholders;
• support the work of the Central Hub as needed.

The candidate is expected to start as soon as possible or September 2023 at the latest. The appointment will be for a period of 12 months. Any extension will be contingent on performance, availability of funds, and the human resource needs of the infrastructure. Dutch law stipulates a maximum of 4 years in total for a temporary research-based contract.

What we expect from you
We are seeking a dynamic and versatile candidate, who can support the work of the Central Hub and can adapt quickly to changing priorities. We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications

• Recently completed a Research Master's in Sociology, Demography, or another relevant discipline;
• Good knowledge of Stata;
• Experience in working with large-scale (longitudinal) survey data (e.g., GGS, SHARE);
• Keen eye for detail combined with reliable organizational skill;
• Highly adaptable and able to manage changing priorities with ease;
• Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges;
• Strong communication skills in the English language (written and oral).
  

Terms of employment
Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is €3.098 and the maximum salary is 4.257 gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale 9 cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.

For example, by working an extra two hours a week, it is possible to increase the number of days off from 29 to 41 days a year (with full-time employment).

About NIDI
The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) is a leading European demographic research institute. NIDI is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and affiliated with the University of Groningen. It is located in the center of The Hague providing a unique and stimulating research environment in the broad field of population studies. Currently the staff of the institute consists of about 65 employees of different levels of seniority and organized in a rather horizontal structure within four thematic research groups. The working environment is highly international and NIDI provides ample opportunities for training and development.

The GGP is a cross-national research infrastructure for high-quality, open-access data about population and family dynamics. The main component is the Generation & Gender Survey (GGS) - a unique longitudinal data source on families and people's life courses across different countries. Currently, new data is being collected in several European, Asian, and South-American countries.
The Central Hub of the GGP is located at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) in the center of The Hague. It is responsible for the day-to-day management of the GGP, which includes implementing the governance of the GGP, providing support to national teams in collecting GGS data, and processing the collected data for release to the scientific community.
