Job description

The Department of Anthropology currently has an internal temporary vacancy concerning a part-time research assistant for the project ‘Vital Elements and Postcolonial Moves: Forensics as the Art of Paying Attention in a Mediterranean Harbour Town’ – led by Prof Amade M’charek. This project is funded by a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant. Briefly, the project Vital Elements relates the problem of migration and in particular, migrant death in the Mediterranean, not so much to European deadly borders that kill, but to resources for live and livelihood.

What are you going to do?
You will assist the principal investigator, Prof Amade M’charek.

This will entail:
  • organizing the (bi-)weekly Team meetings (planning, communication, writing minutes if needed, occasionally arranging lunch);
  • assisting with visiting scholars and with organizing Project events (workshops, lunch meetings with guests);
  • assisting the team with the organization of the serv-drive and data-management;
  • assisting the team with the curation of relevant literature;
  • assisting with the production and maintenance of the Project website;
  • assisting the PI with the midterm reports to the ERC;
  • assisting the PI with management of the agenda;
  • assisting the PI with research, such as:
    • conducting literature searches;
    • assisting in desk research for writing funding applications.

Requirements

You have:
  • (some) experience with organizational and research related work, preferably within an ERC project;
  • a Master’s degree in anthropology or related disciplines;
  • outstanding organizational and communicative skills;
  • a pro-active and independent working attitude;
  • excellent proficiency in spoken and written English.

Conditions of employment

The position is exclusively open to internal candidates and concerns temporary employment of 19 hours per week (0.5 fte) at the Department of Anthropology. The starting date will be on and no later than 1 April 2024. The position is for a maximum period of 45 months, in accordance with the available budget within the period of the project. Following a positive assessment after an initial employment term of one year max, and barring altered circumstances, the initial term may be extended for a period to 31 December 2027.

Depending on your relevant experience, the minimum salary will be €2,693 and the maximum salary €3,636 gross per month based on a 38-hour working week, in keeping with salary scale 7, as per the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.

We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
