Job description

Join us for a postdoc positions on the politics of European Union economic governance. You will unravel the major political dynamics shaping Europe’s reform capacities. You will conduct (comparative) case studies on how fiscally conservative (frugal) member states interact with the EU in socio-economic and/or fiscal decision-making.

Job description
The Research Group on European and Global Governance at Erasmus University is offering a postdoctoral position to study the politics of reforming European economies. The position is part of the project “Towards a Resilient European Union? Post-pandemic Economic Governance Amidst Politicization”, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO).

The project starts from the observation that member state compliance with EU reform recommendations (European Semester) has been limited. It aims to investigate whether linking the European Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF, NextGenerationEU) to compliance has led to greater reform efforts, or whether factors such as Euroscepticism have constrained member state action. In addition, it examines how lessons from the RRF shape positions on new EU spending programmes.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct innovative research through theoretically informed (comparative) case studies on socio-economic and/or fiscal policies. The analysis may include factors such as public opinion, actor preferences and coalitions, politicization strategies, and bargaining dynamics—particularly with regard to fiscally conservative (‘frugal’) member states such as Germany and the Netherlands. Italy and Spain are covered by a PhD researcher who started in early 2023.

Research methods may include, but are not limited to, process tracing, document analysis, and interviews with key actors from the EU and its member states. Research visits to Brussels and fieldwork in relevant member states are also envisaged.

You will work in close collaboration with Prof. Dr. Markus Haverland and supervise a junior research assistant. You will have the opportunity to present findings at international conferences, resulting in (co-)authored journal articles in international peer-reviewed journals. You will also contribute to activities aimed at increasing the societal impact of the project’s results. The position reserves 10 percent for teaching activities.

You will be part of the vibrant, internationally oriented, and caring Research Group on European and Global Governance, which is embedded in the Team Policy, Politics and Society.

Requirements

  • PhD in political science, political economy or a related discipline;
  • Research focus and/or interest in EU socio-economic and/or fiscal governance;
  • A track record in publishing in leading academic journals;
  • Willingness to engage in social impact activities;
  • Strong language skills in English and in either Dutch or German
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting

Conditions of employment

We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).

The start date of this position is 1 October 2025 (or earlier) and you will be based in Team Policy, Politics and Society of the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB). This position is for 1 fte. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 4.537 to a maximum of € 6.209 gross per month Scale 11 on a fulltime basis (38 hours), in accordance with the CAO-NU. The contract is offered for a period of 1 year and can be extended with another seven months, if suitability is proven and if continued in the same position.

Department

Department of Public Administration and Sociology (DPAS)

DPAS encompasses the disciplines Public Administration and Sociology: two related scientific fields each with a unique profile. Public Administration studies governance capacity and policy interventions. It focuses on institutional power to organize and intervene in the relations between different social, political and economic actors. Public Administration in Rotterdam goes far beyond the public realm to also pay attention to public-private cooperation and the networks of organizations. Sociology investigates the social structures of societies and the way these evolve. Sociologists in Rotterdam focus, inter alia, on processes of globalization and individualization, and the effects of these processes on international social relations, the labor market and family relations. Social issues that are studied under this banner include migration, flexibilization and solidarity. The perspectives of Public Administration and Sociology complement each other. Together they guarantee a highly relevant and scientific approach to topical administrative and social issues. The bachelor- and master programs of DPAS are built on this profile and develop students into scientifically schooled professionals.
