Postdoctoral researcher in cardiovascular image analysis

The Biomedical engineering & physics department of Amsterdam UMC is looking for a postdoc in medical imaging, deep learning, and cardiovascular modeling.

You will work on a project focused on improving risk stratification for Marfan syndrome patients, with a strong translational goal of informing surgical decision-making. The research bridges multiple domains: cardiovascular image analysis (with a focus on 4D flow MRI), deep learning, and computational biomechanics. The aim of the project is to extract and integrate geometric and mechanical aortic biomarkers in Marfan syndrome patients.

You will develop and refine AI-based tools for automated aortic segmentation, geometric analysis, and in silico modeling. The work will involve both development and validation of machine learning pipelines, and interpretation of model results in a clinical context. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact cardiovascular research at the interface of engineering, medicine, and data science.

As a postdoc, you will:

• apply and improve AI and deep learning tools for automated analysis of cardiovascular imaging data (CT/MRI), with a focus on the aorta in Marfan syndrome patients;
• develop deep neural networks for 3D image segmentation, image registration, and processing of graphs or surface meshes;
• develop novel computational pipelines that integrate image-based geometry, biomechanical modeling, and clinical data for risk prediction of aortic dissection;
• critically evaluate model performance and interpret results in the context of clinical and biomechanical relevance;
• authoring and co-authoring manuscripts submitted to high quality journals;
• present research findings at scientific meetings, workshops, and international conferences.

You have affinity with working on 3D or 4D image analysis methods. Scientific programming experience is essential (preferably in Python). Moreover, experience with neural networks for image analysis, including geometric deep learning approaches, is highly relevant. If you have prior exposure to cardiovascular imaging and numerical modeling, that is a plus.

In addition you meet the following requirements:

• PhD in biomedical engineering, or related field;
• good collaboration skills: you work well in a team;
• excellent ability to communicate, write, and read English. Note: only English applications will be considered.

• A contract for 8 months with no possible extension.
• Salary scale 10: € 3.598 to € 5.669 gross based on full-time employment (depending on education and experience) and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. Calculate your net salary here.
• Holiday hours: 190.4 per year for fulltime and a possibility to save additional hours.
• Pension accrual with BeFrank, a modern, comprehensible and fairly priced pension.
• For >7 km each way, 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs and, for private transport, €0.18 per km up to a maximum of 40 km each way.
