Job description

Are you a Master’s or third-year Bachelor's student looking for ways to push yourself beyond the boundaries of your study program? Would you like to enhance your public speaking, leadership and coaching skills? Then, becoming a guide for the Broader Mind Course is an excellent and unique opportunity for you.

What is the Broader Mind Course?
The Broader Mind Course is an extracurricular, interdisciplinary course for Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam students from all faculties. Its principle aim is to stimulate personal growth while developing a deeper awareness of societal issues. The course invites students to reflect on various themes while actively considering their own roles and possible contributions; focusing on themes such as success & failure, poverty or sustainability.

The role of a guide in this unique course is to facilitate the discussions surrounding these topics and help students to get the most out of the challenging meetups around each theme by providing enthusiastic input and helpful feed-back.

Have you been looking for ways to enhance your public speaking or leadership skills? Becoming a guide for the Broader Mind Course is the perfect opportunity. Before leading these group sessions, you will receive a specialized training course on topics such as coaching skills, enhancing your leadership abilities, building confidence with public speaking, dealing with confrontation, and more. Each part of the training course has been specifically designed to not only assist you in your role as a guide, but also to build your skill sets for the rest of your academic or professional careers.

In a mixed group of students from all VU faculties and programs, students partake in a blended learning course which balances online resources and assignments with dynamic, in-person activities with the goal of working together on different assignments and learning from each other’s perspectives on eight societal themes:
  • Track A (Theme 1 - 4): Success & Failure, Poverty, Human Body, and Rebellion.
  • Track B (Theme 1 - 4): Health & Happiness, Digital World, Viewpoints & Worldview, and Sustainability.

Your duties
  • Coach 25 students
  • Facilitate meetups, group discussions and assignments
  • Provide guidance for online and offline activities
  • Administrative tasks ( like checking attendance and grading)
  • Contribute to the Broader Mind Course’s ongoing development by participating in evaluations.

Requirements

  • Master’s student (or third-year Bachelor’s student with an openness to learn)
  • Good communication skills (or a desire to further develop your existing communication skills!)
  • Coaching experience is an advantage
  • A good command of the English language
  • You must be available for:
    • 8 Guide trainings (17:30 -20:00) and 12 coaching sessions (17:30 -19:30) on Thursday evenings, mid-November 2025 until mid-May 2026.
    • 10 On campus theme meetups during the course in periods 4 and 5( from February til June 2026 ): either Tuesday or Wednesday. Each meetup will take place from 17:30 -19:30. (for specific dates, please see flyer).

Conditions of employment

  • The unique opportunity to take specialized training courses for enhancing your public speaking, leadership, coaching and interpersonal skills. A chance to boost your CV and prepare yourself for a wide range of further academic and professional pursuits.
  • Financial remuneration of €190 per month for a period of 6 months (190 x 6 = €1,140 in total).
  • Intervision style training sessions.
  • Theme-specific coaching sessions during the Broader Mind Course during which you will have the hands-on opportunity to practice facilitating discussions and balancing perspectives surrounding relevant societal topics.
