Job description

We hereby advertise a post-doc position in operator theory and complex analysis with connections to numerical linear algebra at the University of Twente for a duration of 13 months starting in Spring 2026. The research is centered around spectral sets for (specific classes of) operators on finite- and infinite-dimensional spaces and, in particular, numerical ranges of matrices. The position will be supervised by Dr. Felix Schwenninger.

The position will be embedded in the MAST chair (F Schwenninger) within the cluster “Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, Numerics and Systems” (MAGNUS) of the Department of Applied Mathematics. The project “Optimal Constants as Analytic Benchmarks” is financed by the Dutch Research Organization (NWO).

Requirements

  • PhD (or are close to completing a PhD) in pure or applied mathematics, with an excellent profile in functional/complex analysis and fields related to the project (such as, but not limited to, numerical linear algebra, operator algebras, harmonic analysis, algebraic geometry);
  • Creative mindset with excellent problem-solving, writing, analytical, and communication skills;
  • Strong ability to present results effectively and prepare scientific papers for publication in international journals and conferences;
  • Able to work independently while demonstrating strong teamwork skills in an international environment.
  • Willingness to teach mathematics and non-mathematics students, as the position also involves some teaching.

Conditions of employment

  • You will be appointed for a period of 13 months within an inspiring scientific atmosphere in a group with several junior and senior researchers.
  • You can attend scientific workshops and conferences;
  • Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU).
  • Gross salary between € 3.546,- and € 5.538,- per month, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Excellent benefit,s including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8.3% and a solid pension scheme.
  • Free access to sports facilities on campus.
  • A minimum of 232 leave hours in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis.
  • Excellent support for research and facilities for professional and personal development.
  • We are also a family-friendly institution that offers parental leave (both paid and unpaid) and career support for partners.
