Job description

The ideal candidate should be interested in tackling fundamental research questions in these domains and possess strong teaching abilities, having an intrinsic motivation to communicate science to students. Joining us means becoming part of a unique and supportive partnership between the University of Twente (UT) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). This role offers a chance to broaden your horizons and engage in a network dedicated to training the next generation of broad technical professionals.

Location & Mobility
You will be employed by the University of Twente. This role offers a dynamic work environment:
  • Dual Locations: Your teaching activities will connect you with students at both the University of Twente (Enschede) and VU Amsterdam.
  • Connection: To facilitate education and collaboration across both campuses, this role involves travelling between the two sites regularly during teaching periods.

Your responsibilities
  • Inspiring Education: You will teach within the Creative Technology bachelor's programme. Here, you will help students understand how technology influences humans and design, teaching them to build solutions for a better future.
  • Research with Impact: You will resolve fundamental research questions in Internet of Things (IoT), Embedded Computing, Pervasive Computing and/or Artificial Intelligence (AI). You will have the freedom to develop your own research line while connecting with and complementing the themes within the Pervasive Systems group.
  • Collaboration: You will work in a multidisciplinary environment where we value efficient interaction and the establishment of new projects together.

Requirements

We are looking for a colleague with a creative mindset and a passion for connection, education and research.
  • Background: You hold a PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, plus a proven track record in scientific publications.
  • Experience: You have proven experience in Internet of Things (IoT), Embedded Computing, Pervasive Computing, and/or Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Passion for Teaching: You possess strong abilities for teaching, particularly at the bachelor level, and are eager to work with various student groups.
  • Development: You possess a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO) or are willing to acquire one within three years with our support.
  • Communication: You are fluent in English and you possess good communication and social skills. If you do not speak Dutch, we view a willingness to learn as a great advantage.

Conditions of employment

We offer a position with an initial one-year contract. After a positive evaluation, the contract can be converted into a permanent contract. We prioritise your well-being and professional growth:
  • Salary: A gross monthly salary between € 4.728 (scale 11) and € 7.297 (scale 12), depending on your background.
  • Work-Life Balance: We are a family-friendly institution offering parental leave (paid and unpaid) and career support for partners.
  • Time Off: You will receive a minimum of 29 leave days for a full-time position. As full-time employment is 40 hours a week in practice, you also accrue 96 extra leave hours (12 days) annually for additional flexibility.
  • Benefits: A holiday allowance of 8%, a year-end bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme.
  • Growth: We offer excellent professional and personal development programs to support your career path.

Department

You will join the Pervasive Systems research group within the Department of Computer Science. The Pervasive Systems research group envisions a sustainable world achieved through the seamless integration of computing and the physical environment. We design collaborative, embedded sensing systems that interact unobtrusively with their surroundings. Our research focuses on developing scalable, adaptable, and trustworthy systems that ensure reliable, fault-tolerant performance despite inherent resource constraints. You will work in a lively, inspiring, and international organisation where you have independence but are never alone.

The bachelor programme CreativeTechnology is an interdisciplinary program in which the latest smart technology and interactive media for developing solutions that will contribute to a better future for people and society are taught, as well as the principles of Humane by Design. Throughout the many hands-on projects, students gain technical knowledge and skills, as well as the ability to understand how media and technology influence humans, design and creative processes. Using extensive knowledge of computer science and electrical engineering, students learn to cover the entire creation process: from identifying the core question to building a working prototype and testing it with users.
