Job description

Information about the position as Assistant Professor and the duties:

Working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Methodology and Statistics involves developing your own research activities in line with the department’s research programs and in collaboration with members of our department and other TSB departments. Moreover, an Assistant Professor coordinates and teaches one or two courses and supervises several bachelor and/or master theses.

As a researcher, you conduct excellent research on novel methods which are relevant for the social and behavioral sciences. Your research may focus on, among others, data science methods, computational statistics, AI-related methods for psychological research, Bayesian statistics, statistical methodology, (modern) psychometrics, or methods for large-scale, streaming, and high-dimensional data. The candidate is also expected to collaborate with (substantive) researchers in our School and others in applying the new methods.

As a lecturer, you teach general and specialist courses in research methods, data science, and (applied) statistics in the programs in which the Methodology and Statistics department is involved. These include bachelor programs in Psychology and Social Sciences, two research masters (“Social and Behavioral Sciences” and “Individual Differences and Assessment”), the joint TU/e - TiU Data Science bachelor, the “Data Science and Society” master program, and the new “AI for Psychological Research” master. Teaching involves coordinating one or two courses, teaching lectures and tutorials, and supervising research internships, bachelor theses, and master theses. The position also involves contributing to management.

Requirements

Your profile

  • Candidates have a (nearly) completed PhD.
  • Candidates have an excellent (early career) track record in publishing research findings in recognized international scientific journals in the field.
  • We particularly welcome applications from candidates with demonstrable experience in (co-)teaching a large-scale course and supervising students.
  • We expect the candidate to hold or acquire the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ; in Dutch: BKO)
  • Proficiency in English is mandatory (CEFR: C2 level). If the candidate is not proficient in Dutch, we expect them to be willing to learn Dutch (up to a level that enables them to teach in Dutch) within a reasonable duration after starting the position.

  • A salary of minimum €4.728 and maximum €6.433 gross per month for full-time employment, based on UFO profile Assistant Professor and salary scale 11. Tilburg University uses a neutral remuneration system based on relevant work experience.
  • This is a vacancy for an Assistant Professor in accordance with Article 2.3 paragraph 8 sub b CLA DU. You will initially be given a temporary contract for the duration of 18 months.
  • Vacation pay of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
  • Over 8 weeks of vacation leave.
  • The opportunity to work partly on campus and partly from home with a home office allowance of €2 per day.

The Department of Methodology and Statistics is responsible for education and research in methodology and statistics for the social and behavioral sciences.

Methodology and statistics play an essential role in all subfields of the social and behavioral sciences, and related fields. At the Department of Methodology and Statistics we do research on and teach about quantitative and qualitative methods that researchers need in order to answer challenging research questions, come up with strong research designs, critically apply statistical analyses, and avoid bias when interpreting research findings. Within the department, there is a strong focus on developing novel statistical and methodological techniques to tackle complex problems in the social and behavioral sciences.
