Job description

The Research Tooling team, part of the IT department (LIS) at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), works closely with other LIS teams to support researchers across the university. We are a small, agile team responsible for several widely used digital platforms, such as GitLab, GitHub, Azure, Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, JSM), ClusterMarket, and data platforms like Databricks. These platforms support key aspects of the research lifecycle, including collaboration, version control, application deployment, lab management, and data processing. Over the past years, we have focused on building and maintaining the technical foundation for these services, ensuring they are reliable, user-friendly and compliant with privacy and security standards.

As a DevOps Engineer in our team, you will be involved in both operational activities and project-based work. You will contribute to the development and maintenance of core infrastructure, as well as support experimental pilots and new initiatives that help shape the future of research tooling at TU/e. One of your initial key responsibilities will be contributing to the development and maintenance of RAPS, a secure archival solution for research data linked to scientific publications.

We are looking for a colleague with a flexible and solution-oriented mindset, who enjoys working across multiple teams and domains. For this medior-level position we are looking for someone who takes ownership while actively collaborating with a lead engineer and your team members. The Research Tooling team has room for personal development and growth. We are looking for people who are not afraid to take initiative and are willing to take on a pioneering role in the development of our services.

We are developing the Research Cockpit, a front door portal as entry point to the TU/e Research Data Infrastructure. Bringing together workflows for both project and data management across the research lifecycle. These workflows are mainly facilitated via Jira Service Management but are envisioned to integrate with a variety of applications, tools and cloud infrastructure across the Research Data Infrastructure landscape.

Requirements

What do we expect from you?

You are a hands-on engineer with a professional mindset and a strong sense of ownership who can:
  • Work effectively in a dynamic research environment
  • Communicate clearly and constructively with researchers and stakeholders
  • Translate ideas into actionable tasks
  • Contribute to discussions by proposing well-reasoned alternatives when improvements are possible
  • Take initiative and is eager to learn
  • Proactively explore new tools and technologies to improve workflows and solve challenges

You complement this with the following experience and skills:
  • A solid understanding of infrastructure concepts and operational management of applications
  • Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code, ideally using Terraform
  • Experience with containerisation technologies, such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Ability to write and maintain automation scripts, preferably in Python
  • Proficiency in git-based version control workflows
  • Able to work on-site at the TU/e campus at least three days per week; therefore, residing within reasonable commuting distance.

Conditions of employment

An exciting position within an international yet personal university. You are right in the middle of the students, on a green campus within walking distance of the central station. Besides beautiful architecture, you will find varied workplaces and excellent sports facilities. We also offer you:
  • A monthly salary of minimum € 3.546,- to maximum €6.433,- for full-time employment, depending on your knowledge and experience (scale 10/11 collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities).
  • In addition to vacation pay, a structural end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • A favorable arrangement for more holidays or a sabbatical.
  • A selection model for additional fringe benefits.
  • Working hours in consultation for an optimal work-life balance.
  • Scope for your talent with advancement prospects and excellent development opportunities such as mentoring, workshops and coaching.
  • Partially paid parental leave and reimbursement for commuting expenses, working from home and the internet.
  • A generous employer contribution to the favorable ABP pension plan.
