Job description

The Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC) is a leading international research institute dedicated to creating longer lives in good health, and a safe society. We conduct high-quality, ethically responsible biomedical research on life-threatening, high burden, infectious diseases, immune-mediated disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. By integrating non-human primate (NHP) models with advanced imaging, in- and ex-vivo approaches, and innovative non-animal methods, BPRC generates unique translational insights that accelerate the development of vaccines, therapies, and preventive strategies worldwide.

BPRC is at a pivotal moment in its history. In the coming years, we will further strengthen our scientific profile, expand public-private partnerships, and diversify our funding base. This requires strong scientific leadership combined with strategic vision and external positioning.

We are looking for a
Head of Infectious Diseases

We are seeking an inspiring and entrepreneurial Head of Infectious Diseases to lead and further develop our infectious diseases programme, with a focus on (models for) viral infections, parasitic infections such as malaria, and bacterial infections such as tuberculosis.

In this role, you will shape the scientific and strategic direction of the department, lead a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, and act as a key ambassador for BPRC in national and international networks. You will play a central role in strengthening BPRC’s position as a trusted partner for governments, funding agencies, academic consortia, and industry.

This position is ideal for a senior scientist who combines scientific excellence with leadership, vision, and the ability to translate societal challenges into impactful research programmes and collaborations.

Your Role and Responsibilities
Leadership & Organisation

  • Lead, coach, and inspire a department of highly qualified researchers, project leaders, and technicians (approx. 40 persons).
  • Safeguard scientific quality, integrity, and timely delivery of research projects.
  • Foster collaboration across disciplines and departments within BPRC, and with external partners.
  • Oversee departmental budget, annual plans, and reporting.

Strategy, Vision & Positioning

  • Develop and implement a forward-looking strategy for infectious diseases research aligned with BPRC’s mission and long-term ambitions.
  • Translate emerging scientific, societal, and policy developments into new research directions and partnership opportunities, be it in primate research or with non-animal approaches.
  • Actively contribute to the external positioning of BPRC as a leading centre for translational infectious diseases research.
  • Represent BPRC in national and international advisory boards, research networks, and strategic forums.

Science, Innovation & Funding

  • Ensure excellence and impact of the infectious diseases research portfolio, spanning fundamental, translational, and preclinical research.
  • Initiate and lead competitive grant applications and public-private partnerships.
  • Strengthen collaborations with academia, government bodies, and the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors.
  • Actively promote and integrate the development of innovative non-animal research approaches alongside NHP models where scientifically indispensable.
  • Support talent development and career progression within the department.

Your Profile

  • PhD in biomedical sciences, infectious diseases, immunology, or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of experience in a senior leadership or coordinating role within a research environment.
  • Strong international scientific reputation and network in infectious diseases.
  • Demonstrated experience with grant acquisition and managing external collaborations.
  • Affinity with translational research and societal impact.
  • Strategic thinker with a people-centred and inclusive leadership style.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (Dutch proficiency or willingness to learn is an advantage).
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to identify opportunities and build sustainable partnerships.

What we have to offer

  • A highly impactful leadership role in an internationally recognised research institute with a strong societal mission.
  • The opportunity to shape the future direction and external profile of BPRC at a crucial strategic moment.
  • A collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment with committed professionals.
  • Competitive salary and attractive secondary employment conditions, in line with the non-profit sector.
  • Ample room for personal initiative, innovation, and vision.
