Job description

High-tech electromagnetic detection and sensory applications are increasingly influenced by multiphysics phenomena. While these effects were once considered noise, advances in sensor miniaturization and sensitivity have made them integral to performance. Rather than mitigating these influences, new opportunities arise to exploit multiphysics interactions for enhanced sensitivity and broader applicability. Similarly, photonic integrated systems, where electronics and photonics converge for applications such as optical signal routing in large-scale server networks, face challenges in thermal management due to temperature-sensitive components like lasers and nonlinear devices. Addressing these challenges requires innovative modeling tools that combine efficiency with accuracy, bridging the gap between general-purpose multiphysics platforms (e.g., COMSOL) and fast electromagnetic solvers. This position aims to develop advanced modeling frameworks for multiphysics systems, enabling breakthroughs in high-tech and healthcare applications.

Information
As an Assistant Professor, you will:
  • Conduct cutting-edge research in multiphysics modeling for electromagnetic systems and sensors, addressing nonlinear, multi-scale phenomena across time and space.
  • Develop efficient and robust numerical techniques for coupled physical domains, ensuring stability and conservation of key quantities such as energy and charge.
  • Translate fundamental challenges into impactful research questions and contribute to securing research funding from national and European programs (e.g., NWO, TTW, Horizon Europe).
  • Collaborate with industry and academic partners to accelerate technology transfer and innovation.
  • Contribute to TU/e’s educational mission by teaching BSc and MSc courses and supervising student projects.
  • Play an active role in multidisciplinary initiatives within CWTe, C3Te, and other TU/e research centers.

In this role, you will contribute to the ambition of the Beethoven program to educate top talent and strengthen research across the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Requirements

The ideal candidate:
  • Holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Has a strong research track record in electromagnetic modeling techniques and multiphysics systems.
  • Demonstrates expertise in:
    • Advanced numerical modeling and simulation of coupled physical domains.
    • Detection and design methods for high-tech electromagnetic systems.
    • Efficient integration of fast electromagnetic solvers into multiphysics frameworks.
  • Shows potential for leadership and team collaboration.
  • Has experience or strong motivation to secure research funding and build collaborative networks.
  • Shows affinity with teaching and willingness to obtain the University Teaching Qualification.
  • Maintains interest in applying research to practical challenges and industry needs.

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:
  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. For a junior Assistant Professor this is scale 11, min. € 4,728 max. € 6,433 gross per month (on a full-time basis).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • A dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • A Development Track with the prospect of becoming an Associate Professor. If you have a more senior profile, a tailor-made career proposal will be considered.
  • High-quality training programs for academic leadership and teaching.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, as are a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) and partner career support.
