Job description

Are you a highly motivated and enthusiastic person eager to contribute to cutting-edge biomedical imaging research and enhancing our understanding of the brain? The BrainEcho Lab within the Department of Neuroscience at Erasmus MC is looking for a passionate Postdoc (exceptional PhD candidates may also apply) to join our team and develop the next generation of intraoperative neurosurgical image guidance. Currently, neurosurgeons lack real-time, volumetric visualization of brain vasculature during procedures. Your work will bridge this gap, providing clinicians with detailed, continuous 4-dimensional (4D) images that enhance safety and surgical precision.

Key Responsibilities:
  • You will lead the development of the first intraoperative 4D ultrasound prototype by integrating hardware and software in close collaboration with industrial and academic experts.
  • You will design imaging sequences and develop beamforming and signal processing algorithms to achieve ultrafast frame rates and detailed visualization of cerebral vasculature.
  • You will work closely with neurosurgeons to validate image quality and clinical utility in real-world settings.
  • You will publish your findings in high-impact journals and present them at international conferences.

If you are ready to tackle these challenges and make a significant impact on the field of biomedical imaging and neurosurgery, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity at Erasmus MC.

Requirements

You are strongly encouraged to apply if you meet the following criteria:
  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (MSc for PhD candidates).
  • Background in systems development and integration, ultrasound physics, and signal processing.
  • Skilled in MATLAB and Python. Experience with C++ and GPU programming (CUDA) is an advantage.
  • Ability to work in a team, communicate effectively, coordinate multidisciplinary collaborations, and manage complex engineering projects.

Conditions of employment

  • You will receive a temporary position for 3 years.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts a minimum of € 3.598,- and a maximum of € 5.669,- scale 10. (PhD: € 3.108.- and € 3.939.-.
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and an individual travel expense package.
  • Partial working from home is possible, as is working 4 x 9 hours. We believe it is important to have a good work-life balance.
  • An International Office which aids you in preparing for you arrival and stay.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
  • Special benefits include an in-company physiotherapist and a bicycle repair service. There is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.

Employer

Erasmus MC

A healthy population and excellence in healthcare through research and education. This is what Erasmus MC stands for. Conducting groundbreaking work, pushing boundaries and leading the way. In research, education, and healthcare. We are practical people with a high level of expertise, working hard to improve and renew the healthcare of today and the public health of tomorrow.

The BrainEcho Lab develops innovative ultrasound imaging technologies for the brain, to be used for guiding neurosurgical procedures, patient monitoring, and advancing neuroscience research. Our expertise lies in ultrafast, computational, functional, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging, which form the foundation for techniques that enable the study of brain activity and visualization of the brain’s intricate vascular networks.
