Job description

In the role of Fisheries Data Manager at Wageningen Marine Research, you are an indispensable link in safeguarding the quality of data in our databases. Through quality checks, data imports and data extractions, you support researchers in their work. In addition, you are an important point of contact for database developers when new information from research needs to be stored in databases.

Your tasks and responsibilities as Fisheries Data Manager include:
  • Carefully checking research data and ensuring it is stored in one of the WMR databases.
  • Advising project leaders on the correct methods for data entry.
  • Creating metadata records for data collections.
  • Optimising quality control procedures in collaboration with other data managers.
  • Acting as a link between researchers’ requirements for data storage and database developers.
  • Supplying data to WMR data portals or those of other organisations.

Team
As the link between data collection and data use, you will be part of various project teams. Most of the data you will work with relates to sampling carried out on board fishing vessels. Your base team will initially be the thematic team for fisheries research and innovation.

Wageningen Marine Research and IT environment
We operate in an applied scientific environment focused on marine and freshwater ecology, where we collect and store field data for analyses and complex models. You will work closely with the other three fisheries data managers, as well as with colleagues who collect and enter data and project leaders who carry out analyses. You will also regularly collaborate with the WMR IT team, which consists of a database developer, functional administrator, technical administrator, application developer, subject-matter data specialist and information manager.

Requirements

Above all, you enjoy acting as a bridge between two disciplines: substantive research and database development. You are able to work well both independently and as part of a team. You work accurately and have a proactive, solution-oriented attitude.

You also have:
  • A completed higher professional education (HBO) qualification, preferably in a biological field, or demonstrable equivalent working and thinking level gained through experience;
  • Proven experience with programming in SQL, Python, R and/or other programming languages;
  • An interest in (fish) biology;
  • Proficiency in Dutch, both spoken and written.

In our international working environment, communication increasingly takes place in English. For this position, English language level B2 is required https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr-3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale. If you do not yet meet this level, we will of course support you, and you can make use of our language centre, https://www.wur.nl/nl/onderwijs-opleidingen/wageningen-into-languages.htm.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

Wageningen University & Research offers excellent terms of employment. A few highlights from our Collective Labour Agreement include:
  • working hours that can be discussed and arranged so that they allow for the best possible work-life balance;
  • sabbatical leave, study leave, and partially paid parental leave;
  • there is a strong focus on vitality and you can make use of the sports facilities available on campus for a small fee;
  • a fixed year-end bonus of 8,3%;
  • excellent pension scheme.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between € 2,979,- and € 4,374.- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 7/8). Additionally a contract for 24 to 36 hours can be discussed. As for your contract, we initially offer a one-year contract that can be extended - if possible within (company) organizational circumstances - on good performance. Of course, we are happy to have a conversation with you if you have any questions about this.
