Job description

Are you interested in optical experiments on an exciting new semiconductor ? At Eindhoven University of technology, we pioneered direct bandgap SiGe with a hexagonal crystal structure, hex-SiGe. This is the first direct bandgap semiconductor fully compatible with silicon technology. This vacancy is focused to ultrafast infrared photodetectors as well as on ultrasensitive infrared phototransistors based on hex-SiGe.

Information
We are currently looking for a highly motivated doctoral researcher for a new position at the Advanced Nanomaterials and Devices (AND) group of the Eindhoven University of Technology (the Netherlands). In particular, the goal is to study the absorption of infrared light in this exciting new semiconductor and to apply this knowledge to group IV infrared photodetectors. The ultimate challenge is to demonstrate an infrared photodetector with single photon detectivity using the phototransistor principle.

You will be working in a multidisciplinary team embedded in the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education. The group is part of the Casimir Institute, the Center for Quantum Materials and Technology and part of the work is performed at the Nanolab cleanroom. For more information on our research group, see https://www.tue.nl/en/research/research-groups/advanced-nanomaterials-devices.

We offer excellent primary and secondary benefits, a highly innovative and prospering academic ecosystem, and are situated in one of the strongest high-tech hotspots worldwide.

Requirements

  • Motivated researcher, with a MSc in (applied) physics or a similar degree
  • The ideal candidate would have experience in research on 2D materials and/or experience with (ultrafast) optical techniques and/or terahertz spectroscopy and/or nanofabrication
  • Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in English, good communication skills
  • Independent and responsible
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (C1 level)

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:
  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. You will spend a minimum of 10% of your four-year employment on teaching tasks, with a maximum of 15% per year of your employment.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. € 3,059 - max. € 3,881).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
