Job description

Welcome to Maastricht University!
Are you interested in fostering future-proof healthcare? This PhD position offers the opportunity to explore how interprofessional teams can use insights from the Epic electronic health record to learn together, improve care, and strengthen team resilience.

PhD candidate on Interprofessional Learning and Team Resilience through the Electronic Health Record

Our goal: You will contribute to the E-PLUS project (Epic and interprofessional Learning Used in Sync), a practice-oriented collaboration between the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) and Maastricht University Medical Center+ (MUMC+). The project supports interprofessional care teams in making optimal use of available healthcare information for care optimisation.

Your colleagues: You will be based at the Department of Educational Development and Research and the School of Health Professions Education (SHE). Together with colleagues from FHML, MUMC+, and the MUMC+ Quality, Innovation and Research expertise unit, you will work in an interdisciplinary network that bridges research, education, and daily healthcare practice.

In this PhD project, you will investigate what information interprofessional teams need to recognise and evaluate resilience challenges (e.g., high workload and rapid staff changes) and how that information can support collaborative decision-making and learning. Your work will combine scientific rigour with direct relevance for healthcare practice.

What you do
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop a PhD proposal that outlines four studies in line with the project plan.
  • Analyse healthcare information needs for strengthening team resilience.
  • Design and implement educational activities that foster interprofessional learning and care optimisation in healthcare practice.
  • Conduct quantitative and/or qualitative research to design, implement, and evaluate these educational activities (Educational Design Research).

What you bring
We’re not looking for checkboxes; we’re interested in who you are and what you bring. Do you recognise yourself in this?

Key requirements:
  • Master’s degree in a relevant domain (obtained).
  • Experience in research in education, healthcare, health sciences, or a related domain.
  • Strong collaboration skills, creativity, and the ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency in both Dutch and English, given the predominantly Dutch-speaking study context.
  • Motivation to contribute to practice-oriented research and educational innovation.

What we offer
At Maastricht University, you’ll work in an international, open, and engaged environment. We offer:
  • A temporary employment contract for 12 months (1.0 FTE). Upon positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.
  • A gross monthly salary between € 3,059 and € 3,881 (based on full-time employment of 38 hours per week), plus 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • 29 vacation days (full-time), four additional public holidays (Carnival Monday and Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day), and the option to accrue up to 12 extra days through compensation hours.
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it, plus a monthly commuting and internet allowance.
  • Excellent secondary employment conditions, including a good pension scheme with ABP, company fitness, and access to extensive sports facilities.
  • Space and facilities for your personal and professional development, including a wide range of training programmes and initiatives such as ‘acknowledge and appreciate’.
