The University of Amsterdam is an institute steeped in tradition. An offshoot of the Athenaeum Illustre (1632), the University of Amsterdam is one of the largest comprehensive research universities in the Netherlands, with over 30,000 students and 6,000 employees.

Teaching research are conducted over seven faculties in the areas of the humanities, social sciences, economics and business, law, science, medicine and dentistry. The teaching and research at the University of Amsterdam are noted for their high quality. In keeping with previous years, the University of Amsterdam was ranked best Dutch university in the 2009 The Higher Education QS World University Rankings, an annual review of the world’s best universities. The University of Amsterdam is the only Dutch university to be featured in the top-50 list.
