Job description

The Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy at the University of Amsterdam invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral researcher position in theoretical high-energy multimessenger astrophysics.

The research will focus on numerical simulations of compact object mergers and core-collapse supernovae with a particular focus on making connections to multi-messenger observations and stellar evolution.

Requirements

You should have a PhD in astronomy and/or physics. You should have a proven track record in theoretical high-energy astrophysics, numerical relativity, or multi-messenger astrophysics.

Conditions of employment

The appointment is intended for an initial period of 2 years, with renewal for a 3rd year contingent upon funding and satisfactory progress. The start of the appointment will be October 2020, with some flexibility.

The salary will be in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2,709 to €4,274 (salary scale 10) gross per month (based on a fulltime appointment). This is excl. 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end of year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science has a student body of around 6,500, as well as 1,600 members of staff working in education, research or support services. Researchers and students at the Faculty of Science are fascinated by every aspect of how the world works, be it elementary particles, the birth of the universe or the functioning of the brain.

The position will be embedded in the research group of Dr Philipp Mösta, which is part of the GRAPPA center for astroparticle physics. The successful applicant will also work in close collaboration with the group of Dr Samaya Nissanke (multimessenger gravitational-wave astrophysics).

The University of Amsterdam has a strong profile in the natural sciences, and has expanded upon that role with the founding of the GRAPPA center for astroparticle physics in 2012. There are also close ties with the Nikhef Institute, which is involved in LHC, KM3NeT and gravitational wave instrumentation and analysis.
