Job description

You will play an important role in achieving ESHCC's ambitions by developing, implementing, executing and evaluating the research policy. Collecting information about relevant developments in the field of research and translating these into the consequences for the research policy is part of your duties. In addition, you will manage the faculty's research office on a daily basis. You advise the Director of Research and the Faculty Board on research matters and act as secretary to the Standing Committee for research Performance (VCW).

You are a conversation partner for researchers, maintain close contact with them and fulfil a coordinating role in the policy alignment. When identifying and acquiring external funding for research (drawing up and submitting research proposals; budgeting, matching), you will proactively support researchers. You are aware of the latest developments in the field of research grants at both national and European level.

In addition, you will monitor the progress of research and projects, including PhD tracks, and report on this periodically. You collect relevant management information in the field of research in collaboration with colleagues from the Faculty Office and the Research Office and report on this to the faculty management. You actively provide content relating to research and grants for both the external website and the intranet. You are responsible for drawing up the research budget texts and the annual research report for the faculty. In addition, you will be responsible for the faculty reports for the purpose of external research assessment, which are coordinated and supervised by you.

Finally, you are also responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of a good quality assurance system, with regard to open science, research ethics and data management. You are the faculty contact person for METIS and other research applications. You represent the faculty in a number of university and national consultative bodies.

Requirements

  • Completed education at an academic level and preferably with a doctorate in humanities or social sciences;
  • Several years of relevant work experience;
  • Proven affinity or experience with research;
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills;
  • Very good command of the Dutch and English languages, both oral and written;
  • Ability to master new subjects in a short period of time and able to deal with several subjects side by side;
  • Conceptually and analytically strong, numerically well versed;
  • Result-oriented, environment conscious, focused on cooperation;
  • Work attitude: accurate, initiating, independent and self-starting.

Conditions of employment

  • A dynamic working environment with room for own initiative
  • Your initial employment term will be 1 year and can be converted into a permanent contract after a maximum of one renewal if your performance proves satisfactory

Department

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is part of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The faculty has three departments: History, Arts and Culture and Media & Communication. Research takes place within the framework of two faculty research centres: ERMeCC and History@Erasmus. ESHCC is located in the Van der Goot (M) building on the Woudestein campus of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. There are more than 2000 students and over 200 employees within the faculty. 

The ESHCC has an ambitious research agenda. We want to strengthen our involvement in multidisciplinary research, continue the share of ‘second and third flow of funding’ (tweede en derde geldstroom) in our total funding and increase our social impact by setting up workshops for Creative Industry, Media & Business and Privacy & Surveillance.
