Job description

This Postdoc research is part of a collaboration between the Dutch scrap industry and Delft University on predicting the dynamics of complex-shaped particles in particle extraction processes. The ultimate aim of the study is to replace hand sorting in the recycling industry by mechanical sorting processes that can rival the quality of human hand pickers. Research at the Resources and Recycling group has a reputation for translating fundamental science into industrial reality, resulting in six spin-off companies to date. The project offers the opportunity to join our team, and work together with other Post-docs and PhD students involved in high-tech recycling.
The main task of the Postdoc will be to develop an understanding of the relation between the visual characteristics of scrap particles and their dynamical response to point forces, based on an underlying (probabilistic) model of distinct classes of particles. Experiments with different types of point forces should provide a verification of the model. The newly developed model will be used to optimise sorting processes in pilot implementations.

Resources and Recycling is a research group within Engineering Structures, with strong links to the recycling industry. The group’s ambition is to create breakthroughs in recycling by applying science to innovative processes and implementing them in collaborations with industry. The ongoing research projects combine theoretical insights, simulation and modelling with experiments in the group’s laboratory and in pilot plants.

Requirements

Our group seeks a driven researcher with a background in physics/mechanical engineering (PhD degree) and a solid training in experimental research and modelling. A good comprehension of English, both spoken and written, is required. Candidates should also have an affinity with innovation and working in multidisciplinary teams.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 3 years.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (salary indication: €3389-€4274 per month). It is an option for the candidate to be employed directly by the Dutch scrap industry.
